Vice President Dick Cheney said on Sunday he expects fellow Republicans to rally and keep control of Congress in the November 7 election -- and offered to bet on it.
Although polls show unhappy voters may turn over the U.S. House of Representatives and possibly the Senate to Democrats, Cheney said: "I think we're doing very well out there."
Appearing on NBC's "Meet the Press," Cheney told moderator Tim Russert, "I'll even bet you a dinner that we hold both houses."
"I don't bet," replied Russert.
Cheney was questioned about the election, which will determine whether President George W. Bush will still have a Congress controlled by his fellow Republicans during his final two years in office.
Cheney said the administration does not fear that it would face tougher congressional scrutiny of the Iraq war and other matters if Democrats win control of the House or Senate.
"We have had oversight all along," said Cheney, rejecting Democratic complaints that Republicans have failed to hold the administration accountable.
The Washington Post reported on Sunday that Republicans intend to spend the vast majority of their financial war chest in the next two months on negative ads.
"I hope our guys have good hard-hitting advertisements," Cheney said when asked about the report. "Certainly the opposition does."
"Just think about what's at stake in this election in terms of national security and the global war on terror," Cheney said.
Democrats have accused Republicans of trying to scare the public into voting to keep them in charge of Congress, and say Democrats could better protect America.
"They (Republicans) think they can't win the elections unless they talk about terrorism all the time," Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean told "Fox News Sunday."
"We think we ought to talk about a new direction for the country," said Dean, whose party's campaign platform includes upgrading health care and education while also increasing anti-terrorism efforts.
Sen. John Kerry, a Massachusetts Democrat whom Bush defeated in the 2004 presidential election, said Republicans have no advantage on national security.
"They've been incompetent," Kerry told CNN's "Late Edition." "... We can do better."

Are Republicans dissappointed in the representatives we elected to the House and Sanate? Damned right we are.
We are very dissappointed, but we arent going to cut off our noses to spite our face.
Certainly many people we elected suck, but when compared to the alternative, they shine like a briliant light.

I couldn't sleep last night and I got up and found "Meet the Depressed" on at midnight. Tim was so red-faced, so intent in his questioning I thought he might bust a gut! I think he thought he was still residing at that Demonrat rally on MSNBC last week! He was out for blood and I commend Vice President Cheney for his grace and calm during this "hit".

Hah! Do WHAT better? The Democrats can't even figure out what their priorites for national security are. Aids? Global Warming? More federal money for cities? Maybe Kerry will roll out his secret plan soon.

Congress is one thing, but lately a lot of armchair quarterbacking goes on around here when it comes to Bush. Up until September of 2001, I was disappointed in the man. For example, I thought he should of told them to stick it, instead of apologizing for allowing our slower flying reconnizance plane to get rammed by ony of their fighter jets in international airspace. Five years ago today, he was instantly transforrmed. I wouldn't want to have to make most of the decisions that he has been forced to, but I have rarely found it hard to disagree with a single one of them.
My mom, a dyed in the wool democrat, even acknowledges that the Dems are weak on national security. john Kerry states, we can do better, of course we can, but not with his party.
How can anyone possibly explain that statement? Show me the wreckage from all the terrorist attacks since 9/11, then we'll talk.

Please tell me more! Did Cheney man handle the tater head? Did he get Timmy to turn beet red like he does when he gets mad? I've yet to see anyone get the best of Cheney and they usually come off looking the fool if they try.
My favorite exchange was when Cheney was asked whether he still went hunting. After some back and forth, Russert asked him if he brought his shotgun to the interview...
Paraphrasing Russert: "Do I need to be concerned you'll shoot me?"
