If you haven't read "First In," you should. It gets inside our CIA guys on the ground, and while it's absolutely clear they are patriots, it's also clear that they flat-out love the intrigue, the danger, and the satisfaction of ridding the world of baddies.

While it's the US military, I do think one of their best recruiting
commercial series is the one with the byline "We've Been Waiting For You"
that shows the future recruit doing something fairly extreme as a teenager.
It's good when a person actually gets paid to do something they'd
otherwise day-dream about while slogging along at a desk job.

Consider these people aren't out in the open fighting us on a battlefield anywhere. This is a covert war so 1000 a year isn't bad, especially considering that number doesn't even include Iraq. Otherwise I guess you're contending that our armed forces don't know what the hell they're doing in which case you should join, if you haven't already, to set them straight.

Yeah, but we had an enemy that fought openly in a conventional style head-to-head warfare in the Pacific. The enemy we fight now skulks around in caves and hides among civilians, so 5000 killed or captured is respectable. I wonder if this number counts AL Qaeda killed in Iraq. I'm guessing it doesn't. Add that in and you may well get another 1500 KIA and captured.

I agree. The guys I know who have served in this ME war are annoyed that they have to shoot around civilians to kill the enmy. They feel that there should be no distinction between a combatant and a non-combatant in a combat zone.

Personally, I won't be satisfied until they are tied to a chair and have their eyelids held open while Hillary, Janet Reno, and Madeline Albright perform a striptease.
