I think liberals spend so much time talking to each other in their liberal echo chamber that it rarely occurs to them that there might be someone in the crowd who would be offended by any attacks on Republicans and also have the guts to speak up about it.

I remember a college employee picnic at a State college where the (now retired) President attacked the Republican Governor as if it were a Democrat fundraiser at which there couldn't possibly be any conservative Republicans who might disagree. Of course, he had kind words for a powerful tax-and-spend Republican, so I guess he thought he was being bipartisan.
