For just a while, in the aftermath of the attacks five years ago today, old-fashioned patriotism flourished. Remember?
We were indeed one nation for a while, remember? But it didnt take long for the return of political divisiveness.
We were even one nation under God again for a while, remember? And there was no protest from militant secularists because at times like that they have nothing to offer.
So members of Congress stood shoulder to shoulder, linking arms and singing God Bless America. Remember?
As congressional leaders, Supreme Court justices and former presidents filed into the National Cathedral for a televised prayer service, the organist played A Mighty Fortress Is Our God and O God, Our Help In Ages Past.
Remember what they heard from Billy Graham, 82 and frail?
We all watched in horror as planes crashed into the steel and glass of the World Trade Center. Those majestic towers were examples of the prosperity and creativity of America. When damaged, they plummeted to the ground. Yet underneath the debris is a foundation that was not destroyed, and therein lies the truth of that old hymn, How Firm a Foundation.
We now have a choice, whether to disintegrate emotionally and spiritually as a nation, or to become stronger through all of this struggle, to rebuild on a solid foundation. I believe we are in the process of starting to rebuild, and that foundation is our trust in God.
Yet within months we were again debating the propriety of wishing one another Merry Christmas while our courts were considering the appropriateness of keeping under God in our Pledge of Allegiance.
Five years later, that resurgence of patriotism and faith seems so short-lived, doesnt it?
It makes you wonder what, if anything, was learned.

We are Americans and we got back to the business of being an American. What do they want 5 years of being a do nothinkg breaking heart liberal?
The divisiveness all came from the left and poorly responded to by the right but either way, here we are and all they do is bitch about it.
Today we remember. Tomorrow, about half the nation goes back to forgetting.

... sadly, only for one brief moment. Must we be faced with such horror to remember our smallness and our need of God? A good post and a good reminder.
For about two months after 9/11 a degree of courtesy and consideration appeared in American life which I would have sworn had vanished in the '50's. With the sword of barbarous fanaticism over our heads, it seemed like people cherished one another and behaved with extra kindness. It was in many ways a magical time. (Until liberals began to chip away at it.)
It's a fantasy that we were temporarily united. All that happened is that the left realized it needed to hide its true face for a while, at least until the temporary awareness we were at war by the general public faded. Five years later, they are their snarling, ugly selves again.
Five years later, they are their snarling, ugly selves again.
I would say that they are even worse now.
I don't know. Were you around in the 80's? It was pretty snarling and ugly then, too.
