There are times when surf fishing that all I catch are rays. If I don't kill them getting the hook out I grab them by the tail and test their aerodynamic properties as I reintroduce them to their natural environment.

I am willing to bet some folks are just out to make some gore money off the tails by selling them as the one that killed Steve,and I suppose there are by now some listed on Ebay.

When I lived in south Texas and would go to the gulf coast to fish. Frequently you would catch a sting ray. Now these arent the big fellows that killed Steve..they are small perhaps twelve inches wide...but essentially they are the same creature. Whenever we caught one we cut off the tail and left the sting ray out on the beach to die.

Why? Because people (like my uncle for example) step on them out in the surf and get the barb left in their leg. The pain is excrutiating for an adult let alone for a child even for one of these smaller creatures.

I like nature as much as the next person. But in my world people come first. I dont hesitate to shoot a rattler and I dont object to leaving sting rays on beaches to die.
