Sen. Feingold faults Bush's war language

By FREDERIC J. FROMMER, Associated Press Writer 28 minutes ago

Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold (news, bio, voting record) called on President Bush to refrain from using the phrase "Islamic fascists," saying it was offensive to Muslims and has nothing to do with global terrorists fighting the United States.

"We must avoid using misleading and offensive terms that link Islam with those who subvert this great religion or who distort its teachings to justify terrorist activities," Feingold said Tuesday in a speech to the Arab American Institute on Capitol Hill.

The Wisconsin senator, a potential 2008 presidential candidate, said the label "Islamic fascists" makes no sense and doesn't help the U.S. effort to combat terrorism.

"Fascist ideology doesn't have anything to do with the way global terrorist networks think or operate, and it doesn't have anything to do with the overwhelming majority of Muslims around the world who practice the peaceful teachings of Islam," Feingold said.

In seeking to explain the term, the White House referred to comments made last week by homeland security adviser Fran Townsend.

You make an interesting point. It used to be that Bush et al, used to make a big effort to differentiate between muslims and terrorists. Folks like Rush and Hannity have been alot less careful. They were using Islamic Fascists before the government was. Do you think that the line is blurring for most Americans? Will Islam have to be globally outlawed in order to cut out the cancer of their radicalism? Do most freepers mistrust ALL Muslims? I'm asking. (For myself, I am just not sure).

So, how do you think the phrase "Islamic Fascists" plays in the Arab and Muslim World in terms of its effect on their perceptions of our intentions and policies? Is it productive, or counterproductive?

I believe it doesn't make much of a difference to the ones who regard us with more favor, i.e. young westernized men and women. These people realize that they too are targets of the Islamic fascists and they would recognize the distinction between this ideology and a general, mainstream, Islamic religious affiliation, of which they and most of the muslims in the USA (hopefully) are. Also, remember the commanders of these terrorist orgs. are well educated from western universities. They've seen what we have to offer first hand and want to destroy it.

The label should be viewed as a positive discriminator by the muslims who don't desire jihad instead of a general muslim label. Caving in to the post modern scourge of our generation, Political Correctness, in this matter as you have done creates the effects of the self fulfilling prophecy you mention. Shouting down the distinction and vilifying those who truthfully label our enemy clouds the issue and contributes unnecessarily to our bad press. People like you and the Senator tell them they should be insulted by this label and thereby imply that it includes them, and so they believe you and react accordingly. You are doing the very thing you are trying to prevent. Enforcing the distinction in this language gives our allies something to rally around and distance themselves from. It also gives them the opportunity your PC beliefs deny them - the opportunity to seperate Islam from terrorism. It puts a political ideological label to something that otherwise would be/is generalized to include Islam as a whole.

Why would you need to use the term around them? They weren't conducting a terror operation, they were just hanging out and there would have been no context in which to use that term. If you started a conversation about the terrorists that her religion breeds then there may have been a context in which to use it. It would be her choice at that point to identify with the Islamic fascists or to distance herself from them.

You seem to have made up your mind not to see the reality in front of you. That's fine but you have made a choice to join the chorus of those who don't take the threat seriously and want to stand in the way of eliminating it. I hope that your false sense of superiority and civility will comfort you should those who represent this peaceful religion decide to cut off your head and broadcast the event to the world. Maybe you'd just go ahead and submit though. That kinda sounds like what you'd do given the fact that you are afraid to offend those who will kill you once your usefulness has run its course.

Yep. Between Feingold and Rosie O'Donnel's comments supporting terrorists this morning on 'The View,' the Lefty Moonbats were well-represented in the media today. *Rolleyes*

Good points. I guess you have more optimism than me, which is great. I'm younger and unfortunately more cynical. I wish I could have a brighter outlook like you do. I think our difference is that you still believe these peoples' monds can be changed. I don't think so, given the fact that those who lead the fascist movement already came over here to see who we really are and the advantages our technologically supperior society has to offer, and it only made them worse.

My wife played water-volleyball with a young Muslim woman My daughter played with one of the little boys. What I observed over the weekend convinced me more of the existence of our similarities than of our differences. I for one would certainly feel ashamed of myself if I had used the term "Islamic Fascist" in their presence. You might call it "political correctness", I call it "civility".

That is another advantage of the term "Islamic Fundamentalist" -- it clearly refers to the specific sect that creates the problem.

Look at who the Palestinians elected, thier choice was a corrupt greedy organization or a terrorist organization based on Islamic fundamentalism.

At least in the US (Louisiana, specifically), when faced with a choice between a two-bit crook and an extremist affiliated with a terrorist organization, they chose the crook.
