Opportunism Knocking (Romney Smackdown)
The Boston Globe ^ | 09/12/2006 | Brian McGrory

Posted on 09/12/2006 4:39:15 PM PDT by JRochelle

One day it's Matt Amorello; the next day it's former Iranian president Mohammad Khatami. Who's the ever-valorous Mitt Romney going to go after next on behalf of the citizens of Massachusetts?

He was outraged -- outraged! -- that a world-class tyrant like Khatami would be invited to speak at a terrorist-sympathizing institution like Harvard University and announced with great fanfare that no state resources would be devoted to his visit. Never mind that Khatami is considered by many in the human rights field to be a reformer or that the State Department gave him a visa to travel in the United States or that his speech on Sunday urged restraint on the part of all religions and nations.

Romney raged to the Globe about how someone like Khatami should not be welcomed on any campus. ``The development of nuclear technology, the jailing of students, and religious oppression . . . suggest that his lecture on tolerance would be a farce." And then he made a beeline to the Fox News studio to beam his views the nation over.

You go, Mitt. You go.

This kinka sums up my view of Romney. One day he welcomes the tyrants in, the next day he's outraged!

One day he's pro-choice, the next day he's pro-life. O.K. Flame away, I can take it!

... by many in the human rights field...

Many in the human rights field are nothing but Anti-Americans and could care less about the human rights of people in places like Iran.

I will say that Mitt did the right thing concerning the Iranian leader.
But he should have done the same with that Chinese leader.

And Bush had the guy at the white house too. That made my blood boil.

Romney must be rubbing some people the wrong way. Could they be the opposition?

When he speaks out against the world class human rights violators who persecuted the Amiraults, I'll respect him. But, he's already demonstrated that he's afraid to.

As an outsider looking into Mass. my first opinion of Mitt is that he's a vacant empty suit and has no right to claim the Presidency.

I didn't follow that case very closely.
I did read what Dorothy Rabinowitz wrote about those child molester witch hunts of the 1980s.
And Amirault was completely innocent.

I don't know if Romney could have freed him or not.

Did Romney ever give a reason for not pardoning him?

So the Globe hates him? I'm going to have to start giving him a second look.

Senators usually mark a little time, some a lot of time, just waiting to run for the only higher office left. Sooner or later they all run for president.

The trend, however, is to elect governors. It seems, now, governors all have to test the waters quickly. Most of them are term limited.

That's okay. I notice you seem to have made Governor Romney your cause of choice. Don't like Mormons, eh?

I'm not a huge fan of Romney, but when something needs to get done(Big Dig collapse etc..) he gets things done.I can't say that about most politicians in this state. As for the columnist and the Boston Globe in general, they are nothing but a colony of plagerizing moonbats.

I would agree with you to a point. Romney tends to be a little too pragmatic vs. inconsistent. Translation: MA does alot more business with the PRC than with Iran. Once he's out of office, watch for him to ratchet up the rhetoric. That being said, you have to be cognizant of the odious individual who authored this article. Brian McGrory is one of the leading bow-tied socialists at the Globe. For him to accuse anyone of kowtowing to the Chinese is an absolute freaking joke!

I think you are judging Romney too harshly, therefore i will call you evil. I guess the dude not pardoned was your dad? Maybe when you are older you'll understand that you take the good with the bad, in all levels of life, or go be a hermit, or.... make everyone miserable!

I probably would have posted it . . . I ascribe to the idea that others shared that any attack from the uber-liberal Globe Editorial board is a blow for victory for Romney.

These "Human rights" groups are in bed with the liberal Democrats . . . how they can give Khatami praise and criticize Romney tells you how messed up they are.

Also, the piece lacks proper context. Khatami is a terrorist and praises many terrorists groups (even praised Hezzbolah at Harvard) . . . his PERSONAL record is attrocious. We are at war with terrorists/jihadists. Also, it's hard to hold the 2003 Chinese Premier as responsible for Tianemen Square several years earlier (quite dishonest journalism . . . big surprise, eh?) Vietnam may have a restrictive government, but it's crimes hardly rise to the level of the Iran regime.

JRochelle . . . you seem to be quite oppossed to Romney . . . who's your candidate?
