Sam: I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines, it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn't. Because they were holding on to something.

Frodo: What are we holding on to, Sam?

Sam: There's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it's worth fighting for.

A hole in the skyline and a hole in our hearts.

Those are great shots, and I'll be driving to visit my daughter at UConn this weekend, driving up I95 from Baltimore.

I'll say the same 2 words I have uttered every time I drive by the new NY skyline.

Fu(#ing Bas&ards.

Thanks for the pics. Very touching, and sobering.

Interesting contrast. The Pentagon rebuilt and back in business, the other site still a hole in the ground. It's time to stop mucking around and get something rebuilt there, preferably something bigger and better than what we lost. The time for planning and debating and weeping and wailing is past. Time to build for better times ahead. Remember those lost and honor their lives, but keep moving the ball down the field. Those lost are best honored by ensuring and demonstrating in a tangible way that this country and its people will endure and prosper in spite of those who would kill us.

I went to NYC for the first time back in April. I kept looking for the twin towers, but I didn't see them...

It is amazing how much the skyline of NYC is affected by the loss of the WTC.
