Not a problem since I don't shop there anyway. The point is though that we shouldn't have to avoid them - they shoudn't be there in the first place.

If you go anywhere in our educational system, you will probably find proponents against making English our national language. If our esteemed educators in our universities get their way, English will never be pronounced the official language of the United States!

i went to grad school at George Washington University in D.C. and my lib profs were mostly all against it.

I have never seen such a thing and better not, otherwise Loews shoppers would witness a scene like none other.

The Lowe's (I think he meant Lowe's) all around here have signs in spanish on the aisles.

What a load of pap. I urge anyone to visit Toronto - nobody speaks English there anymore. It's anything but English.

The number of Hispanic radio stations in the United States grew from 645 in 2003 to 839 this year, according to Arbitron.

In five years, the number of local Hispanic TV stations in the U.S. grew by 56% from 87 stations to 151.

...most Latin American immigrants to the United States lose their ability to speak Spanish over the course of a few generations.

I always get a kick out of observing a mexican immigrant family out to dinner where the parents chauvinistically speak Spanish to their children and the children speak perfect American accented English to each other.

Guess what amigos? Your children belong to America.

A report in the Population and Development Review found that far from threatening the dominance of English, most Latin American immigrants to the United States lose their ability to speak Spanish over the course of a few generations.

So we only need to wait 100 years to see if this study is correct?

Yep, and since the study shows the loss of the immigrant tongue over three generations it clearly has not investigated the situation with Mexican immigrants, a situation which differs in many ways from past immigration. See many of the other posts in this thread for details.

Hiya..I'm going to check them out here. I just moved to the Westerville (Columbus) area of Ohio and in the process found rental ads for apartments in Spanish, spanish language advertisements outside certain apartment buildings and at least one banner hanging from the front of a catholic church, which I could not read, but I assume is announcement of a spanish speaking mass.

I certainly hope that I have not jumped from the frying pan (Toledo) into the fire (Columbus)....any local Freepers that can advise or shall I just go hang out at the local home depot at 6 am?

FLORIDA HAS A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT WHICH MAKES ENGLISH THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE.

ALSO, Florida has the language abomination of Miami where the Spanish speakers have used the language as a wedge.

If anything Florida proves this Rueters article WRONG.

In miami, such ads are used to discriminate against english speakers. IOW europeans are not welcome, black people are not welcome.
