Nancy Pelosi and the GOP's piñata strategy
msnbc ^ | 9/13/06 | Howard Fineman

Posted on 09/13/2006 12:02:14 PM PDT by mathprof

The Republican message for this fall’s election season turns Franklin Roosevelt’s famous statement on its head: fear is good, or at least it’s a strategy. They want the electorate to be afraid, very afraid — of the terrorists, of course, but also of an elegantly dressed woman from San Francisco.

Democratic operatives have been warning Pelosi for months that she needs to prepare for what Rove and the GOP have in store: an all out, coast-to-coast assault.

As the Democratic leader in line to be speaker if her party wins control of the House, Republicans see Pelosi as the piñata of politics in 2006.

Six years into the Bush presidency, GOP operatives in essence are conceding the obvious: voters are angry about Iraq, the economy, immigration and incompetence.

Rather than spend a lot of time and money defending their record to voters such as Albino, the Rovepublicans will try to scare him into sticking with them — or at least staying away from the polls altogether. The way to do that, they have decided, is to scare him silly about what the Democrats would do with control of Congress.

They want to use Pelosi to give their vision of nightmare a face and name and history.

It’s a page from an old GOP playbook. In 1984, the Democrats held their convention in San Francisco; Republicans renominated Ronald Reagan in Dallas. It was the dawn of the Red State-Blue State, cultural/political divide we see today. Democrats made history, nominating the first woman — Geraldine Ferraro — for vice president. “Independent” GOP groups swarmed into San Francisco... to denounce the Democrats for their liberal stands on abortion, gay rights, taxes and so on. Reagan won 49 states.

The epithet “San Francisco Democrat” had power then, and for years thereafter. Does it still?

"Republicans see Pelosi as the piñata of politics in 2006"

another infantile wording. Add "piñata of politics" to "mean spirited" , "He's so mean" , let's see ... what else ... oh yeah ... their attempt to sound educated ... "He has gravitas" , "speak truth to power"

When will these people grow up?

Quote: "Six years into the Bush presidency, GOP operatives in essence are conceding the obvious: voters are angry about Iraq, the economy, immigration and incompetence."

Translation: We at MSNBC think the voters should be mad about the economy, immigration and stupid Bush's incompetence. Thus, we will use the old "unamed sources" trick to attribute this to the GOP and their "operatives." Furthermore, we are suddenly not as confident that this election is over as we were two months ago and need to start propping up Pelosi as a "victim" of those evil GOP operatives.

Only in terms of a piñata does the phrase "I'd Hit It" even remotely come close to being tolerable wuth regards to Pelosi.

Excellent strategy. When I hear people talking about being upset with Iraq or what-have-you, and at times I do hear people saying that, all I have to do is remind them about Pelosi and they then decide to stick with Republicans.

However, I do wish Reps. could run on the fact that they cleaned up government, quit spending so much, etc....but they can't do that unfortunately.

No they won't grow up...because just in the last few weeks that Congress has been back in session...I have heard John F'n Kerry and others use the word "Katrina" as an expletive...

Bush's foreign policy is a KATRINA policy...and I have heard them say that so and so won't be SWIFTBOATED...and also today on the Senate floor, Sen.Byrd saying that there is a "tsunami" of bad reports out of Iraq...

Also...I heard a dem activist say that the reason that the GOPers don't want Pelosi to be Speaker of the House..is because they are gay-bashers!!

Why not? She is a nightmare. She's a dangerously stupid and deluded woman.
