According to the research done by Kopple and the Chicks themselves, the Free Republic sent out form letters to their 30,000-thick subscription list with market-specific information, saying if the station did not stop playing their music, people would cease listening to the station.

???? Still waiting for mine.

Yeah, me too. I didn't get one. Do you think maybe this writer was lying?

Do you think maybe this writer was lying?

This whole "Woe is us Chicks, we made a simple, offhand remark and look what happened" business is a BIG LIE.

First, the orginal remark about President Bush was not said in an offhand manner.

Second, and most important, the Chicks have acted in a thoroughly cynical, calculating manner since making that original remark. They know what they're doing (in the sense that they have a plan, not in the sense that they're bright about it).

They've deliberately trashed their country music base (what remained of it) in ever more nasty ways in an effort to create a new base of provincial, left-wing, anti-country fans. They know they've blown it with country music, and what better way to get new fans than by playing on those fans' prejudices about the old fans? I mean, what did Reba McEntire ever do to the Dixie Chicks?

The Chicks' whole PR effort has been very calculated. They deserve all the contempt they receive.
