Taking Flight (Video of Boeing 747LCF, 737-900ER)

A first flight is always something to see. It’s the “moment of truth” in an airplane’s early life. It says, “Yeah, we designed this thing, and now we’ll show you that it can actually take to the air.”

We’ve had two opportunities to experience such a moment this month.

Just a few days ago the Boeing Large Cargo Freighter (LCF) took flight for the first time over Taiwan. It was a flight of just over two hours. The first of what we think will be about 250 flight test hours for this unique freighter, a modified 747-400.

We’ve put together a great short video about the LCF...

Earlier this month, we had another great first, as many of us in the Seattle area got to see the newest member of the Next-Generation 737 family fly.

Cool videos at the link. The 747LCF is fugly, but functional. Anyone seen any video of the swing tail in action? I have yet to see that.

I bet it looks better once it gets a paint job.

The first thing that came to my mind (for some unknown reason) is that there's no way they ever could have landed that thing at Kai Tak.

(Anyone who ever flew into Kai Tak knows what I mean)

I rode in the jump seat of a 747-400 coming in and going out of HKG before it went away.

Better than any Disneyland ride!

I think they're going to fly it back to Seattle to get painted.

Not quite, LOL! China Airlines needs to train it's pilots better on how to line up to the correct runway to avoid last minute changes like that!

Kai Tak used to provide some of the best pictures ever of commercial aircraft.

I will get to see it fly, since I've been spending so much time at Boeing field.

I seen on another web sight that they got some more areas of the plane painted with green primer( prevents corrosion, until the final coat is put on ) the nose, and the area were the cockpit is.

Sheesh, 5 minutes of beauty shots for 5 seconds of one rotate and one touchdown. Plus, the video was shot in 16x9 widescreen, but encoded into .wma as 4x3 standard format.

Glad Boeing is better at build airplanes than they are at making movies.

Were you ever there? My first landing there was in a Pan Am 747.During the last minute or so,I thought something had gone wrong and that we were gonna go down. The severity and quickness of the maneuvers,as well as looking out the window and seeing apartment buildings about 100 feet below you, were frightening as hell.It wasn't until after my first experience there that I heard the term "Kai Tak Heart Attack" and I think that's a great way to put it.
