And what are their happless victims supposed to do to protect themselves from a drive by media attack that may wreck their lives and ruin their fortunes? Media needs to be more responsible and accountable, not less so.

Ethics training should be required at today's journalism schools. Both before and after you go though the motions of becoming a journalist.

Tell them to go pound sand when they want statements or interviews...or DEMAND accountability!

Stop buying their papers, and boycott the living dailights out of their advertizers until they show responsibility.

The media will only hold itself as responsible and accountable as their customers demand. As a Trucker, I travel across the country and place a little yellow dot label on each machine owned by the "yellow" press. So if you see a little yellow dot posted on the top of a machine, be aware, before you buy it, you are wasting your money. You might as well purchase the National Enquirer, or Workers Weekly World. The factual integrity of both will be similar.

i.e., don't waste your money.
