Save a seat for Steve

A SPARE seat will be left beside Steve Irwin's widow and children tomorrow, as a special way to remember the Crocodile Hunter during his memorial service.

Irwin's manager and long-time friend John Stainton has refused to reveal too many details about the service, but he has confirmed there will be a spare seat for Irwin beside his wife Terri and their children, Bindi and Bob.

"There will be one seat alongside of the family for Steve because he loved the Crocoseum, he built it," Mr Stainton said.

"His Australia Zoo cap that he always wore watching all the shows with his daughter will be on the seat."

An estimated 5000 people are expected to attend tomnorrow's service at his beloved Australia Zoo on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.

Millions more are expected to watch the service as it is telecast live around the world.

Mr Stainton said there would be a visual tribute to Mr Irwin, with footage of his exploits shown throughout the service.

"It is sad and I think anybody that sees it is going to find it (hard).

"I've tried to lift it and have highlights and funny moments in it, but it's really sad when you see him."

I wish we had cable just for today, so we could see this. I'll be praying for the Irwin family.

Unlike the so called 'Grizzly Man' Timothy Treadwell, Steve took chances. He did live life on the edge and it finally caught up with him. He did use reasonable care but he put himself in harms way, just one too many times.....

Timothy Treadwell, on the other hand not only condemned himself but also his girlfriend to a horrible death being eaten by North America's largest predator. He had said that one day he would be killed by one of the bears he lived amongst. His prediction should have been a wakeup call for his companion.

As one who takes no chances at all in life is condemned to live a boring existance, I celebrate Irwins life. The other side of the coin, I revile the stupidity of Treadwell for living the kind of martyrs life for his tree hugging extreme that is not unlike Islamofascist suicide bombers.

Not really. More people have died in car accidents in the last 100 years than by stingrays. Stingrays are not considered dangerous or aggressive animals.

I understand he was hovering right above this huge ray and his cameraman positioned himself in from of the ray (blocking the rays egress in the process) for a better shot and that spooked the ray and it defended itself. Steve pushed the outside of the envelope once again but this time it pushed back.

I respect him but having taken risks in things myself in my youth, I see it as not unexpected and he finally lost one.

The Australian authorities disagree.

'Irwin didn't intimidate stingray'

Police have viewed video footage of Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin's final moments and ruled out that he was intimidating or threatening the stingray that killed him.

Yes but the camera man originally gave the version I mentioned. It could be political I suppose....or just a falsly reported original story by the cameraman..

Yeah but he was friends with his crew. Can you imagine their shock and anguish? Something rare, freaky and horrible happened and they were trying to find a reason. I think the authorities would be less emotional and looking for a cause rather than trying to find an explanantion for a freak occurance that must have been traumatic for those present.
