They did. The White House spokesman said the US wouldn't respond to Chavez's statement because it wasn't worth responding to. He pointed out that Chavez can exercise Free Speech at the UN or in Central Park - something that he doesn't allow his own citizens to do in Venezuela.

A very good point.

Somebody has to tell me where does it say that foreigners on our soil have "freedom of speech"?
