UN Rights Envoys Condemn Bush Plan On Interrogation

GENEVA (Reuters) - United Nations human rights investigators said on Thursday that legislation proposed by President Bush for tough interrogations of foreign terrorism suspects would breach the Geneva Conventions.

In a statement to the U.N. Human Rights Council, the five independent envoys also said Washington's admission of secret detention centres abroad pointed to "very serious human rights violations in relation to the hunt for alleged terrorists."

They again called for the closure of the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where hundreds of foreign terrorism suspects are being held, alleging continued violations of international law on torture and arbitrary detention.

Despite U.S. declarations of intent to shut Guantanamo, Washington had done nothing yet and was even planning to open a new cell bloc at the end of this month, they said.

"We call on the government to close down the Guantanamo Bay detention center and, until that time, to refrain from any practice amounting to torture, cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment," they said.

The statement was read out by Leila Zerrougui, the Algerian chairwoman of the U.N. working group on arbitrary detention.

She is one of the five investigators who have tried since June 2004 to visit Guantanamo detainees. Washington has said it would allow three of them to go for one day, but not to see prisoners privately, a key demand of the investigators.

Is this (another) anti-American, pro-terrorist, pro-Islam, anti-Western-democracy, position any surprise?? The scum and villany of the U.N. continue their support for the "dark side". Hey Washington, why are these maggots still infesting our shores?? And now they are emboldened by not only our anti-American socialist DemoRats, but the third-world dregs they bring into the U.N. to denegrate our country and our President.

What part of treason, despotism and deceit do you not understand??

In addition, what part of the Geneva Convention applies to people who are not signatories of the Convention?? But of course, taking advantage of the ill-informed is that status quo methodology of the left....

This same UN group also exaggerated the number of deaths for August.

We should just chop off the terrorists heads.

The UN has no problem with that.

Any organization that allows Syria on it's comittee is NOT work wasting any time on. The Geneva Convention does NOT in any way shape or form cover Terrorists. You do not have to be an expert in International Law to understand it. You can read it here and see for yourself. It has nothing at all ever remorely resembeling a rule that can be twisted to cover those who are Terrorists. They are illegal combantants.

This is humorous. There is a poll on FoxNews.com (see: StudioB - Question of the Day). Click on the link if you wish to take the poll.

Should the U.S. stop funding the United Nations?
Yes 94% (45,912)
No 5% (2,436)
Not sure 1% (568)
48,916 total votes

LOL!

Last time I checked, Al Queda has yet to sign the Geneva Convention. And if they did, none of what the President is recommending would be considered torture. However, this person might consider 'beheading' to be torture....
