Several years ago there was some sort of a fund in order to help repair the "Citgo" sign as it was in pretty bad shape. It was named as a "landmark" and if my memory serves a lot of people gave money for the project.

I was quite surprised to learn that it is still owned by a big Corporation. It is obviously a commercial, but I thought that it was given some sort of a special status because of the Red Sox connection.

According to the Boston Landmarks Commission, the CITGO sign actually recieved no "landmark" status when it was renovated. The sign is on land owned by Boston University.
