Heath Shuler-Linked Firm Pays Back Taxes

Charlotte, NC -- A real estate brokerage house associated with Democratic House candidate Heath Shuler belatedly paid over $69,000 in unpaid taxes Friday after The Associated Press raised questions with the campaign.

Shuler, a former star quarterback at the University of Tennessee, has a 20 percent stake in the Knoxville-based business, Heath Shuler Real Estate, which he founded with his brother, Bengie, in 1998. They sold it in 2003 to four men who formed HSRE and HSRE Properties.

A recent AP review of tax records in Knoxville and surrounding Knox County found the businesses had been chronically delinquent in paying their local taxes. The AP presented the information to the Shuler campaign this week.

Jason Rudd, a lawyer for Shuler in Jackson, Tenn., said he threatened the three principal owners — Robert Browder, Charlie Hicks and Jack Cornett — with legal action on Shuler's behalf unless they immediately pay the delinquent taxes and begin the process of removing Shuler's name from the business.

Fred Sisk, chief deputy trustee for Knox County, confirmed Friday that HSRE and HSRE Properties had paid their county tax bills. A spokesman for the city did not immediately return a call seeking confirmation of that payment.

Rudd said Shuler intends to sue to ensure his name is taken off the business.

Shuler is running for the House in western North Carolina's 11th Congressional District, seeking to unseat eight-term Republican Rep. Charles Taylor. The race is among those Democrats have high hopes of winning as they push to regain control of the House.

Is this the same Heath Shuler who was drafted by the Redskins and could never make it in the NFL?

Gees, the only reason he came out a year early was because Payton Manning was the number two QB at Tenn. What an asshat, first he screws the Redskins, and now we find out he is a Dem. Hope he twists his leg.

"I didn't think liberal football players existed."

They exist, they just can't play. They get hit once and call John Edwards.

Wow - what a total misstatement of the facts! PEyton was still in high school Heath's junior year. Heath was an excellent college QB, so I doubt he had any fear of Peyton Manning at all. Peyton was the 3rd string QB the year after Heath left. The senior Jerry Colquitt was the starter and was injured in the first game against UCLA. Todd Helton (yes the Colorado Rockies player) took his place and Peyton played some in that game. They were both extremely in experienced. We would have loved to have had Heath stay for his Senior year. I doubt anybody would have beat him out of the job.

He probably should have played college ball one more year, but who can blame him for coming out when he was a top 5 draft pick? He should have fired his agent when the agent held out WAY too long on Heath's contract. That put him behind on learning the offense, and he never caught up. Then he had some kind of foot injury that prevented him from playing again.

I think you would find Heath to be pretty conservative on many issues. The sad thing is that conservative democrats have no voice in Washington. The have to toe the party line.

He had a shoulder injury (throwing shoulder) that would not get any better.

You are right, he should never have held out. That has been a problem that so many promising rookies have never recovered from.

I watched him as QB many times and my take was he wasn't smart enough to play QB in the NFL. I guess he was alright playing in a wishbone offense, but Gus Ferrotte ate his lunch when it came to making decisions with the ball.

Like there's anybody in Knoxville that can't write "GO VOLS", even if they spell their own names.
