FBI arrests gang leader, 4 others; 1 agent hurt

The FBI gang task force about noon today arrested a gang leader who fled after a confrontation in southeast Houston that left an agent with a gunshot wound, an FBI spokeswoman said.

Jose Jorge Brooks, 38, is believed to be the leader of a group of gang members who were confronted by the task force about midnight as they were attempting to rob people, FBI spokeswoman Shauna Dunlap said.

Details of the shooting remained under investigation this morning, but Dunlap said the agent was wounded during the confrontation outside a motel in the 8900 block of the Gulf Freeway.

The agent, whose name was not released, was listed in good condition and was expected to be released from a hospital in 48 hours, Dunlap said. She was unable to describe how the agent was shot, the nature of his wounds or how many shots were fired.

"The circumstances of how he was injured are part of the investigation," she said.

The agent is part of the FBI's Enhanced Multiagency Gang Task Force, which includes Houston police and members of the FBI Special Weapons and Tactics Team, Dunlap said.

Dunlap said immigration officials were trying to determine whether Brooks is a U.S. citizen.

Arrested at the motel were Nelson Javier Santos, 25; William Caesar Arcer, 43; Jose Guillen, 28; and Armando Buenaventu Argueta, 28, she said. The men are illegal immigrants, Dunlap said, but their native countries had not been confirmed.

Dunlap said all four had pistols. They were charged with a state crime and could be charged with federal crimes also, but Dunlap did not know the specific charges.

No information was available on the two gang members who escaped.

Dunlap said it was unclear which gang they belong to, but that the task force of uniformed officers had targeted them.

"This was an ongoing investigation and the goal was to arrest them," she said.

She added that reports that undercover agents were involved were untrue.

Houston PING

Good to see that the 10 member FBI team is making some headway.

Shame that the federal government has to do what the local government refused to do for years.

Immigrants? Hardly!

The word is "aliens". "Journalists" should learn to use it.

I was wondering if they were displaced NOLAns who have been making trouble, but it looks like Mexican drug gangs.

Tough people to deal with. I'm sure many cops would rather hand out speeding tickets.

Houston was called one of five highest crime areas in the states by the DOJ before katrina ever hit. It's gotten worse, and it's become convenient to cover over corruption and the flood of illegals to say it's all katrina evacuees. I doubt that that is true, anymore.

The opposite is true. If the federal government did its job and enforced our immigration laws, these gangs would not be here. President Bush might say of this story: "It's just immigrants shooting FBI agents that Americans refuse to shoot".

Locally the city government has encouraged illegal immigrant labor.

Mayor White has blamed it on Katrina evacuees in part so that he could ask for federal money to fight crime. He has stated this openly. Perhaps he genuinely believes that they are to blame (he seems to have back peddled on that claim somewhat), but I know a number of first time victims of violent crime who were attacked last year BEFORE Katrina had ever formed. And the 2004 crime stats show rising crime for Houston.

He took it upon himself to kick out scheduled events at the convention center last year (and dared organizations to sue the city over cancelled convention business) and yet he expresses shock that the federal government has been slow to finance some of the programs he has asked for or to reimburse him for money that he spent.

It worked. He got re-elected safely and no Republican or Democrat challenger opposed him. Now we all suffer from the result.
