So should he have used the term "colored people"

I wondered about that too. The only person I know that uses the term "Colored people" is my grandmother. For the better part of her life "Negro" and "Colored" were the socially accepted terms and I don't expect her to change now. She means nothing derogatory about it, those are just the words she uses.
