Lowry: Score One for the Neanderthals on Immigration(Present!)
The Salt Lake Tribune ^ | 9/22/2006 | Rich Lowry

Posted on 09/23/2006 7:47:13 AM PDT by kellynla

When it comes to the border, we're all Neanderthals now.

When the amateur border guards, the Minutemen, first set up with their lawn chairs and binoculars at the U.S.-Mexico border and started talking about the need to build a fence, polite opinion scoffed. Now, the fence almost represents a consensus position, embraced by the left and right alike, from likely Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton to the rabble-rousing pro-enforcement conservative Rep. Tom Tancredo of Colorado.

Sixty-four Democrats just voted with Republicans in the House to pass legislation authorizing 700 miles of double-layered fence along the border. The Senate recently voted 94-3 to spend nearly $2 billion on 370 miles' worth of fencing and will take up the House bill soon. As the panicked National Immigration Law Center says, ''In recent days, there has been a serious deterioration of the position of pro-immigrant forces in Congress.''

This political state of play is the exact reverse of what was widely predicted earlier in the year when illegal immigrants were marching in the streets; Hispanic and church groups were decrying the harsh treatment of illegals in a pro-enforcement House bill; and the Senate was passing an amnesty bill euphemistically dubbed ''comprehensive reform.'' Back then, it was assumed that the crazies in the House would bend to a Senate bill endorsed by all the great and the good. But a funny thing happened on the way to ''comprehensive reform'' - the political marketplace worked.

Instead of embracing the Senate approach, the House undertook field hearings around the country. The delay gave candidates a chance to sample public opinion that is markedly sympathetic to the crazies.

"Consider the Democratic senator from Nebraska, Ben Nelson, who is running for re-election. He once opposed crackdowns on illegals in his state, but now complains that illegal labor crowds out American workers."

"The delay gave candidates a chance to sample public opinion that is markedly sympathetic to the crazies."

Yea, us crazies who favor the rule of law in a modern society.

I'm glad to see people coming around to an idea Pat Buchanan has been pushing since 1992.

Totally serious now Kellynla.

Do you think the writer of this article has ever picked up a shovel or cleaned a toilet in his metrosexual life.

"Almost" is correct. The far left and the RINO "the Minutemen are vigilantes" crowd still maintain their suicidal, pathologically stupid positions.

Another example of why I do not subscribe to National Review. That little twerp Rich Lowry is so consumed with his inside-the-beltway crowd that he feels the need to call border security people "crazies." Nice job, Rich.

Although some people think that I am pro-illegal, this is in fact not true. My disagreement has been with what is both practical and effective to secure the border and solve the problem, with the anti-Mexican statements I see in a few posts, and with the personal attacks on the President.

I do not consider people concerned about border security "crazies" and Lowry is a fool for putting such a characterization in print.

Rich Lowry is a total waste as a writer, a pundit, and as a conservative. As I told MNJohnnie on another thread, he and his fellow NR buddies are totally consumed with their superiority. meanwhile, every time he appears on Fox he gets rolled by his democrat opponent.

I will do so this afternoon. I am due at a grandson's football game in an hour, and I need to get my thoughts in order. "Lowry, you little twerp" isn't going to make a good impression. LOL!

If the Feds funded (see below) a bounty pool and each state could license bounty hunters (after doing a background check) and then put a $250 bounty on each illegal captured. Let the market place take care of the situation.

Also, fine each employer $10,000 for each illegal and use that to fund the Bounty Pool.

Consider the Democratic senator from Nebraska, Ben Nelson, who is running for re-election...

Clair McCaskill (D, MO) brilliant disguise as a "Tougher Than Talent"
anti-illegal-immigration crusader is the reason she's running a competitive
race for Senate.

"When it comes to the border, we're all Neanderthals now."

Not quite Rich, I think your buddies over at the Weekly Standard still think open borders is a good thing. That said, I'm glad to see that you have embraced a rational position on protecting our with Mexico. Keep working on Kristol, Barnes, et al.

There are a lot of us who sincerely don't like the idea of them coming here because it's degrading to them and it's disgusting that Americans feel above certain types of work.

In a way I feel the same about forced labor in China producing goods for America.

meanwhile, every time he(Rich lowry) appears on Fox he gets rolled by his democrat opponent.

Especially by bob shrum, disciple, bob beckel.

How many eletions has bob shrum lost now. You can't count them on one finger, but yet little metrosexual "conservative" Richy Lowry rolls over when he "debates" them.
