Gore addresses the audience using a slideshow that includes photographs, charts and graphs of facts related to the problem of global warming. Sayre Theatre Manager Marjorie Ross asked businesses in Sayre, Athens and Waverly for contributions that would allow local students to see the film free of charge. "When people are educated about the problem at a younger age, it reaches them and they can become advocates for the environment," Ross said. "(Global warming) is certainly a topic that concerns all of us," Waverly Middle School Principal Diane Tymoski said. "I felt it was a very important issue to be addressed," said Deb MacNamara, owner of The Paint, Paper, and Lighting Place in Sayre. The Paint, Paper, and Lighting Place was one of 14 businesses that donated for the showings of the film. "The young people need to see it. It will stimulate thought and conversation, and they'll bring the information home to their parents," MacNamara said. "Teachers can use this movie as a learning experience. The message about the environment is very important - we need to take care of our planet," Ross said. "This fits in nicely with our eighth-grade environmental science curriculum. We've talked to them about recycling and other issues," Tymoski said. Ross expressed gratitude for the help of the local businesses. "To be able to give this movie to kids for free would not have happened without the area businesses. They were very receptive," Ross said. "I had seen the movie in Towanda, and was impressed. It's done scientifically, and it's wonderful that it ended on an optimistic note," MacNamara said. More students from Athens and Sayre Area high schools will be seeing the movie on Tuesday. The businesses that contributed to the film showings were: Rockman's Apparel; The Paint, Paper, and Lighting Place; Murrelle Printing; Plants 'N Things Florists; Endless Mountain Donut Company & Bakery; Landy & Landy; Guthrie Clinic Robert Packer Hospital; North Branch Financial Services; Dr. Heather Cutlip; NY - Penn Real Estate; Beauty Secrets Day Spa; McNamara's Office Supply; Jay Carpet One; and Concerned Residents of Bradford and Sullivan Counties.
One other thing...I will not be purchasing anything from the stores that sponsored these brainwashing sessions.
Eighth-grade pseudo-science curriculum, more like.
I had the opportunity to watch the AlGore movie inflight on United during a recent overseas trip. It was indeed every bit as nonsensically bad as I had thought it would be. Pure wacko-propaganda. Almost comically entertaining, in its own way.
Offering alternative viewpoints is not "brainwashing", no matter how ridiculous the topic may be.
Ok, maybe brainwashng is a little strong but you have to know this area of Bradford County PA. Athens and Sayre are dimocrat to the core. I know how teachers think. They think they know more than anyone else. That's why the vast majority are dimocrats. The school districts in our area have been building and spending money like crazy even though enrollments are half of what they were thirty years ago. They think the taxpayers are an unlimited source of money which they aren't. I think the part about taking the info home to the parents says everything you need to know about this "trip" to the movies.
