Dems to Lose House--and Win Senate? (Dem wishful Thinking Alert)

Dems to Lose House--and Win Senate? Up to now the Conventional Wisdom (CW) has been that the Dems have a very good chance to retake the House but will have a much harder time picking up the six seats necessary to take over the Senate. Is it possible this is backwards--that the Dems actually have a better chance of taking the Senate than the House?

If they win all of their own seats (including Liberman's I suppose), and if they win all of the toss-ups, (like Missouri, Tennessee, and Virginia) and hold New Jersey and if Casey wins, and if...

This piece is probably just trying to hold off the wave of Dem suicides until after the election now that it doesn't look like Nancy is going to become Speaker.

Of Course even if the GOP maintains control, the will probably let the Dems control the chamber anyway.

Obviously, you don't have the mind-set of an MSM editor or reporter! To them the Dem's are the moral owners of all levels of government and there must be no checks on balances on the policies that the Dem's wish to impose for the good of the people. (/sarcasm)

Good comment.

Yeppers. This brings to mind the evil Ellsworth Toohey character in Ayn Rand's "The Fountainhead" and how he used his position as a "journalist" to advance his collectivist utopias.

If it is close and Chaffee wins look for him to pull a Jeffords and vote with the Dems. It will be his big thank you to President Bush.

The polls are looking quite bad right now. I hope they are wrong, and things turn around. But as of now I would say it is quite possible the GOP could lose the Senate but keep the House. That would be an unusual scenario but it could happen. At least the Repubs would have a shot at getting their majority back in 2008 or 2010, while if they lose the House I fear they could be out of power for another 40 years.

Ken, and many others who were persuaded by Pelosi not to retire for 2006. You will see many such as Ike Skelton and Murtha retire after the DEMS lose again.

TNC, I agree. The House is hard to get back, not as fluid as the Senate.

I try to remind people this happens every election cycle in the Senate polls are always bad for the GOP in the Senate.

2004- There were many close races where the GOP candidate was behind in October and Sept incldudng Thune, Martinez, and comeback kid David Vitter. Even Burr and Demint struggled.

2002- Remember Wayne Allard was written off in Colorado? Talent was behind in MO. Chambliss was 15% behind Cleland in OCT?

TNC, I remember how bad I felt in October 2004. I thought Bush was going to lose and the DEMS would take back the Senate because Those like Burr were 10% behind Bowles. I listened to Sabato say Bush was a goner and Zogby also.

But then I came here and was at first depressed with all the DEM posters doom and glooming, but the real Conservatives came to the board and told us to have faith that Bush would win. It will all be fine

Too bad so many Repubs in reasonably safe districts decided to retire this year, like Hyde. Makes those seats that much safer to hold. I am sorry Nussle is not running again but I guess he had to take the opportunity to run for governor when it arose.

You are right. In the last 2 election cycles Republicans seemed to surge in the end and it worked out. I hope that can happen a third time but it would be very uncommon for one party to do well in 3 consecutive elections. Still, if the GOP retains control, even by reduced margins, that is a victory.

Even if they keep a majority it will still be a very sad commentary on the state of our union when voters see fit to elect candidates who promise to oppose the president on every security issue while we are at war. It will send a bad signal to the bad guys. Not to mention it will be a bad blow to Republicans if they lose senate seats in such major states as PA, OH, or MO.

Do not worry about Talent he will win. MCkaskill is too liberal to win. , same with Ford.

I believe in the end Burns or DeWine will win against far left wingers in Tester and Brown. I hope Chafee loses because he would switch in a 50/50 anyways.

Nussle was a good move, but Kolbe and Beauprez hurt. Hyde was in his 80's and Roskam will hold the seat. Duckworth is a horrid campaigner and being pumped by the MSM.
