Back up the important stuff and do a clean install for best results.. i.e., reformat the drive. updating directly from MS ME can be iffy at best.
er, Windows ME, I should say...
Will the upgrade package kit include all instructions?
Three of MS's OS's from the past: CE,ME,NT!! And you wonder how MS ever stayed afloat.
Call me crazy but how about loading up IE, then going to the MS site to upgrade to SP2, then closing IE and continuing to use Firefox.
Worked fine for me and I didn't have to do any funky cd burning, getting the download off a torrent, or going to other websites to get the SP2 upgrade.
/boggle
do you have SP2 installed on your machine already? (right click "my computer" icon and choose properties
Not really.
The trick is to boot from the CD to do the install rather than loading it up from within Windows ME (If you do that, it will just install over ME as an upgrade which, while saving your system settings can also cause all sorts of unpleasantness.). If you're system doesn't support booting from CD then you'll need a bootable floppy with CD drivers on it. You should be able to find one by googling for "boot floppy CD" or similar.
Once you get the install program running, really it's very simple.. just follwo the prompts. You'll do fine.
Order Windows XP Service Pack 2 on CD

Windows XP Service Pack 2 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers
If you are running a system that was installed some time ago, you would be wise to backup all your data and do a fresh install, then install SP2. Whatever you do, backup your data before you make any big changes.
OK GOOD!, for some reason I thought they were saying that SP2 itself wasn't going to be available!!! LOL! People need to get with the frickin' program already and update!
That did it. Downloading now. Thanks!
Computer illiteral here. How do I know if I'm currently running SP1 or SP2?
I just like to make a slipstreamed cd its much easier that way, it turns your old Windows XP cd into a new one.
"right click" the the "my computer" icon on your computer and choose properties
"98 hasn't been supported in at least 3 years.
If you're running 98, you're probably infected with virii. "
LOL....You have 100 times more chances of getting a virus from windows XP than you do in 98.
Nice try.
What if my computer won't download the SP2. I tried doing this months ago, several times and when I search for the reason why, the explanation is that my computer is blocking any new updates. I finally gave up and just use my laptop. The XP is from 2002 version and is on my desktop.
The virus makers, like microsoft, no longer support 98. There are not enough of us to bother with.
Go get the stand-alone installer linked further up the thread.
I have to disagree with you on that. I have plenty of clients that have/had 98 machines, and they're always infected with something - firewall or no, antivirus or no.
