The Iraqi government has declared an immediate curfew in the capital, Baghdad, to run until Sunday morning. The move affects both vehicles and pedestrians, a spokesman for the Iraqi prime minister said.
The spokesman did not reveal why a curfew was being put in place, but sectarian violence and blasts have been increasing in recent days. The brother-in-law of the new chief judge in Saddam Hussein's trial was shot dead in Baghdad late on Thursday. The curfew order was announced on state broadcaster Iraqiya. "The government has decided to enforce a curfew on vehicles and individuals starting from Friday evening until 0600 on Sunday morning (0200 GMT)," the message said. An unidentified official at the interior ministry told the Associated Press news agency that "intelligence information on the security situation" had made the announcement necessary. 'Spike' US and Iraqi troops have been reinforcing operations against insurgents and sectarian militias in Baghdad. On Wednesday a US military spokesman said that there had been a spike in violence coinciding with the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which began on Monday, and that suicide attacks were at record levels.
He also said Iraqi security forces were "making a concerted effort" to end sectarian violence by targeting death squads. Shortly after he spoke, 10 people were killed and 11 injured in a shoot-out at a Sunni mosque in the capital. Shia and Sunni militia groups have increasingly been engaged in tit-for-tat attacks on each other since an important Shia shrine in the northern town of Samarra was attacked in February. A Sunni-led insurgency that erupted after the ousting of Saddam Hussein is also continuing. On Thursday, gunman ambushed a car carrying Kadhem Abdul Hussein, the brother-in-law of Judge Mohammad Oreibi al-Khalifa, who is presiding over Saddam Hussein's genocide trial. Mr Abdul Hussein was killed outright and police said his son was injured.

Iraq declares curfew in Baghdad
Fri Sep 29, 2006 6:12 PM ET
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq declared a curfew on Saturday in the capital Baghdad, ordering all cars off the streets and telling people to remain in their homes.
A statement from Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's office said the curfew would remain in force until 6:00 a.m. (0200 GMT) on Sunday. It gave no reason for the measure.
U.S. and Iraqi forces have focused security efforts on the capital in the past few weeks. U.S. commanders say Baghdad has seen a surge in violence in the past week with the start of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
Clashes and bombings have been frequent during that period.
Residents of the Adamiya neighborhood in the north of the city said sounds of shooting and explosions could be heard around dusk on Friday. Police could not confirm clashes in the area.
The U.S. military declined to comment on the curfew.
I thought Bombadan was for the whole month.
Looks like they may be going after some bad guys.
Maybe they got them cornered and now if they are trying to get away it will be obvious due to the curfew.
Just a guess
Heads up.
Sorry I pinged you. Should have known you were already on top of it.
WMD attack?
Thank you.
I always appreciate the ping.
And you're right - it's time for head's up.
Prayers for all our military.

Hmmm....surely no connection?
Connection? Only this snippet:
***Defense Minister Amir Peretz has been told that 17 specific terror attacks are being planned, including the kidnapping of Israeli citizens.
While none of the warnings involve Jerusalem, district police officials say the city is always an attractive target.***

Wiretapping ...again...the Dems will be upset....
Are you all safe and sound? Any news you can pass on that won't tip off the enemy?
Praying for your safety and for all of our troops and workers in Iraq.
Heard something on the evening news about a plan for a Military Coup that would get rid of the current Iraqi PM. That might account for it.
NBC with Brian Williams was reporting tonight that a plot to overthrow the Iraq government by the military was in the planning stages. In other words, a military coup d'etat. Great. Woodward's book says Bush is lying about the situation in Iraq, a Republican congressman from Florida resigns because he's been sending suggestive e-mail to boy pages in Congress, Santorum's in trouble, Allen's in trouble ... When can Republicans get some good news for a change???
