Is Woodward Calling Bush a Liar?
The Washington Post ^ | Friday, September 29, 2006 | Dan Froomkin

After two books that made President Bush look pretty good, Bob Woodward is out with a new one that comes awfully close to calling the president a liar.

I can't imagine Woodward himself ever using the word -- it's much too shrill for the poster boy for the mainstream media.

But is there any other way to describe what seems like the central theme of his new book, tartly titled "State of Denial"?

Woodward is an assistant managing editor of The Washington Post, which is scheduled to run excerpts of the book in its Sunday and Monday editions. But the news about the book first came from CBS, which yesterday uncorked a preview of Woodward's upcoming interview on "60 Minutes". The New York Times ran a long piece this morning, after somehow managing to buy a copy of the book four days before the official release date.

CBS News reports: "Veteran Washington reporter Bob Woodward tells Mike Wallace that the Bush administration has not told the truth regarding the level of violence, especially against U.S. troops, in Iraq. He also reveals key intelligence that predicts the insurgency will grow worse next year. . . .

"According to Woodward, insurgent attacks against coalition troops occur, on average, every 15 minutes, a shocking fact the administration has kept secret. . . .

"The situation is getting much worse, says Woodward, despite what the White House and the Pentagon are saying in public.

Woodward is becoming exceedingly boring.

Nah, the book was originally supposed to be called "State of De Nile".

It's about Egypt.

Someone just misinterpretted Woodward and printed it wrong.

I question the timing of this.

Bob Woodward doesn't lie. Just ask Bill Casey.

Nobody reads Woodward anymore. He's only "relevant" inside the beltway.

Woodward never jumped on the bandwagon with the Plame mess. He actually blasted Fitzgerald.

He has gotten flak for taking the administration's side on that one so know has to "prove himself" by being a bad boy again.

He's a wish-wash. Plus, I can't stand to hear him speak!

"I question the timing of this."

Why question it? The timing is obvious.

This is pretty much the spin CBS is putting on it concerning the "60 Minutes" interview on Sunday.

That spin is also what makes me sure it's all "barnyard residue", so to speak.

"According to Woodward, insurgent attacks against coalition troops occur, on average, every 15 minutes, a shocking fact the administration has kept secret. . . ."

That sounds nonsensical .. CENTCOM reports numbers of insurgent attacks on a regular basis.
The Bush white house couldnt be holding back information since it is reported regularly and it comes out of CENTCOM anyway.

He's stretching the troop. If he says that "there is an attack against coalition troops every 15 minutes" , the he would be including attacks against Iraqis, right?

Why does any White House give any access at all to Bob Woodward. It is simple...deny him access, and his fame vanishes overnight.

LEt's talk about the REAL CORRUPTION here ... Simon and Schuster is owned by .. whom? Who also owns what network?

Same deal with Richard Clarke's book back in 2004. This is all hype-cycle stuff put together to sell books.

Is Me. Woodard saying who/what his source is for these allegations? Is anyone going to ask him about this? I thought Mr. Woodard liked President Bush.

He does like Pres. Bush...sort of. I think he voted for him.

But see my above post. I believe that he feels he is perceived too much as an administration lap dog so felt he had to publish something more acceptable to the MSM.

(By the way, I like your tag line.)

So what? Ike thought we would wrap things up in Europe quickly in the Winter of 1944-5. He never saw the Germans' Ardenne Offensive, and the resulting Battle of the Bulge coming. There was a massive new bloodletting just as it seemed victory was in our grasp.

Shit happens. This is war. The insurgents are tougher than we expected. So we redouble our efforts and do what it takes to prevail. We have no choice. This is a war we cannot afford to lose. I am very pleased that Bush came out with his "party of cut and run" in response to this sniveling, inconsequential book. It was a very appropriate counterpunch.

So Woodward hasn't been invited to the latest DC cocktail parties.
