Ex Rep Foley Checks into Alcohol Rehab
NY Post ^ | Oct 2, 2006 | Lara Jordan

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Former Rep. Mark Foley, under FBI investigation for e-mail exchanges with teenage congressional pages, has checked himself into rehabilitation facility for alcoholism treatment and accepts responsibility for his actions, his attorney acknowledged Monday.

The attorney, David Roth, would not identify the facility, but told the Associated Press in West Palm Beach, Fla., that Foley had checked in over the weekend.

"I strongly believe that I am an alcoholic and have accepted the need for immediate treatment for alcoholism and other behavioral problems," Foley said in a statement, Roth told the AP.

Foley, a Republican, abruptly quit Congress on Friday after reports surfaced that he'd sent sexually charged electronic messages to boys working as pages. In the statement, Foley said the "events that led to my resignation have crystalized recognition of my long-standing and significant alcoholism and emotional difficulties."

"I deeply regret and accept full responsibility for the harm I have caused," Foley said. He also expressed "gratitude for the prayers and words of encouragement that have been conveyed to me."

The FBI, meanwhile, "is conducting an assessment to see if there's been a violation of federal law," according to FBI spokesman Richard Kolko.

White House press secretary Tony Snow, asked about that Monday on ABC's "Good Morning America," urged greater efforts to "figure out what happened here." He called it "a terrible story" and said he considered it unfortunate that "people are thinking, 'OK, can I get political advantage out of this'."

Democrats are not Republicans and they can get away with quite a lot. The Hon. Fred Richmond, fer instance, can solicit underage homosexual sex and get re elected until he goes to prison for tax evasion and two other federal charges: Congressional bad boys

Foley is trying to give drunkenness a very, very bad name.

Foley is slandering upstanding Skid Row bums who have never tried to do the unthinkable with young boys.

Given the chance, we at the TdTGC would impose stronger penalties than mere prison from amputation to the full measure of justice by auto da fe followed by fire.

Consider the effrontery of Pelosi (Demonrat-Gay Francisco) who represents the likes of Dikes on Bikes as the "mainatream" of her constituency, trying to use a homosexual predator scandal to climb to speaker.

Foley is a despicable pervert, but that does not make Pelosi fit to be speaker.

We should also note that Giddy Dole wanted this pervert to run for the Senate in Florida. Wouldn't that have been fun for Bill Nelson? All part of Giddy's relentless drive to "moderate" the GOP Senate caucus.

Yup.

Foley's a pervert...who used his powerful position to try and take advantage of male minors. Even IF he is an alcoholic, it doesn't excuse his behavior and abject hypocrisy.

I've posted this belief before here on Free Republic...one thing that I so admire about conservatives is, when confronted by solid proof of illegal or just plain bad behavior, they know how to take out their trash. (Can't say the same for Dems, but then that's why I left the Left.)

Foley resigned, not out of a sense of shame or honor, but because he knew he was caught and would get the boot by the voters. Shame on those Republican Party members who tried to cover this up...it will come back to bite them...

I had a bad feeling we are going to learn Hastert knew more about the Foley matter than he is saying he knew. As for Foley going for ETOH TX it is a nice place to hide and many of those places have young men as techs..

"Captain's Quarters" Blog has some info on Hastert and it aint pretty.

This will be a perect storm blowing (well, of course I chose that word deliberately) the Republicans out of power just when it is becoming clear Al Qaeda has been decimated and Iraq is turing the corner.

With the donks back in power...forget it

Hastert Knew While Foley Flew

Well, well, well. It appears the Republicans actually can make the Foley controversy worse. As if it wasn't bad enough that John Boehner knew about Foley's track record of sexual harassment of his underage pages, now it turns out that Speaker Denny Hastert lied about what he knew and when he knew it. Roll Call reports that Thomas Reynolds (R-NY), the chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, told Hastert about Foley's predatory actions in late winter or early spring of this year:

National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Tom Reynolds (N.Y.) issued a statement Saturday in which he said that he had informed Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) of allegations of improper contacts between then-Rep. Mark Foley (R-Fla.) and at least one former male page, contradicting earlier statements from Hastert.' GOP sources said Reynolds told Hastert earlier in 2006, shortly after the February GOP leadership elections. Hastert's response to Reynolds' warning remains unclear.

Hastert's staff insisted Friday night that he was not told of the Foley allegations and are scrambling to respond to Reynolds' statement.

I cannot tell CQ readers how disgusted I am with Speaker Hastert. Reynolds is no fringe nutcase; he's the man Hastert trusted to run the midterm re-elections of the Republican caucus. He has no reason to lie, but Hastert apparently did. This also calls into question Boehner's earlier reversal, when he denied saying that he informed Hastert after Hastert denied knowing of Foley's activities.

Hastert should have been a man from the beginning and admit that he knew about Foley. Now he has destroyed any credibility left in his Speakership, and he has only compounded the embarrassment for the GOP caucus. Foley's actions reflect on Foley alone, but thanks to Hastert and perhaps Boehner, the aftermath will reflect on all Republicans in the House.

Republicans have to act swiftly to remove the stench of Foleygate from the party. They need to demand the resignation of Hastert as Speaker, as well as Boehner as Majority Leader if he lied to protect Hastert. Allowing Foley off the hook was a mistake in judgment, but this is a betrayal of those who trusted Hastert to lead the House with dignity, honesty, and integrity.

CLARIFICATION: When I say resign, I mean from their leadership positions. Neither committed a crime, and their constituents should judge whether they should continue to represent them.

UPDATE: CQ readers seem to have misunderstood what this post concerns. Here's what Hastert's office was saying yesterday:

The resignation rocked the Capitol, and especially Foley's GOP colleagues, as lawmakers were rushing to adjourn for at least six weeks. House Majority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) told The Washington Post last night that he had learned this spring of inappropriate "contact" between Foley and a 16-year-old page. Boehner said he then told House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.). Boehner later contacted The Post and said he could not remember whether he talked to Hastert.

It was not immediately clear what actions Hastert took. His spokesman had said earlier that the speaker did not know of the sexually charged online exchanges between Foley and the boy.

Today, Reynolds' statement demolishes Hastert's denial. Hastert lied about his knowledge of the case. It doesn't make any difference if Hastert got Foley to resign, or whether some news outlets sat on the story. He bald-faced lied, and he apparently got Boehner to retract his statement that Boehner had informed him of Foley's inappropriate behavior in the spring. Hastert tried to cover his own butt by hiding the truth, and it appears Boehner tried to help him do it.

Also, this isn't a "dirty trick". The timing might have been manipulated, but a dirty trick involves false allegations. No one framed Foley -- he did this to himself.

UPDATE II: Another article from yesterday that reflects that Hastert's office denied knowing anything of the Foley allegations. Ron Bonjean, Hastert's spokesman, made it clear that Hastert knew nothing of the earlier allegations, and bear in mind that this was when people were asking about how the Republicans could have failed to inform the Page Board of the allegations.

UPDATE III: One last update, and then I'm moving on. I am not so much angry about the decision made by GOP leadership that the evidence and the demands of the parents to drop the issue left them little to do about Foley other than chastise him. I think they should have at least informed the Page Board, since that is the procedure, but that's a simple error in judgment. I'm not claiming that Hastert knew about the IMs months ago, because apparently no one but a few Democratic operatives knew about that until last week.

What makes me angry and disappointed is the denial by Hastert that he knew anything about Foley's issues on Friday. Recall that Majority Leader John Boehner had already told the press that he told Hastert about the earlier e-mails months ago, and after Hastert's statement, Boehner had to retract that. Only after Reynolds released his statement did Hastert acknowledge that he knew about Foley's earlier issues. It's the dishonesty and the butt-covering that I find unacceptable in a House Speaker, who is two heartbeats away from the Presidency.

*From other sites I have learned the office of the pages warned the pages about Foley.

* That is what happens when one accepts the normalisation of homosexuality. Any institution which accepts it as normal WILL be subverted, weakened, and destroyed.

What could Hastert have done? At 16, The men were of legal age and were not working under Foley. Technically, it was all legal. All the targets had to do was block Foleys IM's if they didn't want his advances. Legally, what could Hastert have done? The government can't tell people who they can date and who they can't. I don't see where Hastert could have stopped Foley if Foley wanted to do it.
IF one of the young men worked under Foley and was solicited, he could have brought up harassment charges, but he didn't. So now what? There was no crime other than Foley being a flaming fag (which is demented but unfortunately not illegal).

Alcohol? Whatever Foley. Alcohol does not make you target children sexually, it may loosen inhibitions for behavior you've held in temptation prior.

If you were a Democrat maybe you'd get away with this because all they care about are the politics. You'll have no such allowance on this side of the aisle. Your behavior targeting pages entrusted to adult care in D.C. is perverse. It's a betrayal that can't be blamed on alcohol.

Dear bornacatholic,

"What makes me angry and disappointed is the denial by Hastert that he knew anything about Foley's issues on Friday."

What I understood is that Mr. Hastert was reacting to the more serious allegations related to the IMs.

I think this blogger may need to take a chill pill.

CREW is a dirty tricks democrat group. They are the ones who orchestrated "culture of corruption" to attack delay.

Once he resigned they focused on foley.

It is funded by george Soros.

QUOTE::::
Who is C.R.E.W.?

Here’s what The Hill wrote:

One target of Republican criticism is Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), the group that last year assisted former Rep. Chris Bell (D-Texas) in drafting an ethics complaint against DeLay, which resulted in an admonishment of DeLay from the ethics committee. At last week’s press conference, Melanie Sloan, CREW’s executive director, said that DeLay should step down as majority leader.

From 1995 to 1998, CREW’s Sloan served as minority counsel for the House Judiciary Committee under Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.). Before that, Sloan served as the nominations counsel on the Senate Judiciary Committee under Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.).

According to GOP research, Mark Penn, who had been a pollster for President Clinton, and Daniel Berger, a major Democratic donor, are on CREW’s board. Spokeswoman Naomi Seligman declined several requests to reveal the membership of CREW’s board, although she confirmed that Penn and Berger are members. Last year, Berger made a $100,000 contribution to America Coming Together (ACT), a 527 group that was dedicated to defeating Bush in the presidential election, according to politicalmoneyline.com, a website that tracks fundraising.

CREW declined to respond to the RNC talking points or House GOP research.

C.R.E.W. is one of four “public interest” organizations which the RNC has long identifed as major recipients of George Soros richly-funded Open Society Institute. It is backing the risible Wilson/Plame civil suit against Cheney and others.

Instant Messages are NOT emails

Your post feeds into the ignorance promoted by the media.

The EMAILS were known but they had nothing sexual.

The instant messages came out and within 48hours foley was gone.

Hassert has said they know of the nonsexual house emails. The house email system keeps a record of all emails.

IM's are OUTSIDE the house system. It also matters if they are on computer or phone.

What could Hastert have done?

*Read him the moral riot act. While it may have been, techinically "legal" vis a vis age of consent, what Foley did was immoral and, accrd to many lawyers, prosecutable

Foley prolly knows more will be coming out which might be one reason he run oft for alcohol treatment..

"But wait! There's more!"

I'm totally convinced that this is the final nail in the GOPs coffin for November.

Just damn.
