1958, a small High School in Palmetto Florida. A young lady of the Mennonite religion asked not to have to dress out for gym because her religion forbade her from wearing "shameful" clothing. The school immediately provided a waiver for her and the whole thing was over. I graduated with this young lady who wore a gray dress and white hat every day to school for four years. Not one student ever teased her or berated her.

A different time I guess.......

Back in my Central America days I saw lots of Leftist Mennonites supporting the Sandinistas and the FMLN of El Salvador. Once I challenged a Mennonite couple about it who were wearing traditional clothing and they objected to the trendy Leftists. So just like Catholics, Methodists, Lutherans, et al, it was a divided sect.

Still I don't think exceptions should be made in public schools for uniforms for Mennonites or mohammadans. Don't attend the school if you don't like the rules. Most public schools are unable to rise to the level of the cult of mediocrity anyway.
