The screenwriter/director I mentioned is Paul Schrader. He's best known for Taxi Driver (not one of my favorite, but has done some remarkable movies.

Interesting. I love American Gigolo, City Hall and Mosquito Coast. The others... not too familiar with. Recognize Last Temptation of Christ, but did not see it; I thought it would be too disturbing.
