NEW YORK - Five weeks out from the midterm elections, MSNBC/McClatchy polls, conducted by Mason-Dixon in eight states, show Democrats are in striking distance of taking control of the Senate. The Democrats are very likely to gain several Senate seats with some races still rated as toss-ups.

In the Senate, Democrats need to gain six seats to regain control of the chamber. Our polls show that this is certainly possible as five races are toss-ups, one now narrowly shows a gain for Democrats -- Pennsylvania -- and the party maintains control of Sen. Maria Cantwell’s Senate seat in Washington. In addition, other Mason-Dixon polls released Sunday indicate trouble for Republicans in three other GOP-held seats.

I assumed we had lost the House, but figured we would hold the Senate. Now the MSM is predicting a Dem Senate in a month as well. Probably more gloom and doom from the usual suspects, but good for an argument...

I am not sure it will make a lot of difference. The Republicans have been letting the minority run both houses for the last 6 years.

I suspect there's going to be a lot of wailing and knashing of teeth in democrat camps during the second week of November.

I had figured we'd drop the three in the Senate, but I hadn't seen any numbers showing the rest in such trouble.

I figure there are a few more "scandals" and books "exposing" the White House to come in the next few weeks...

No, the Dems are not...howling, barking, and wishful thinking...still leaves them in the same place they were in the last set elections...where they LOST!

Yawn- I've been hearing this for the past 10 years. The MSM always underestimates Republican voters by at least 5 percentage points, sometimes 10.

Some of these freepers here just don't see how John McCain, Lindsey Graham, Mike Dewine, Snowe and Chaffee have hurt a portion of the GOP base.

You are right in that they Governed as a minority. Thanks to Lott and Frist.

Exactly. We cannot be in such bad shape now, because the Rats will pull more dirty tricks in coming weeks. We'll need to campaign very aggressively. The question is, will we?

These are not predictions, these are DNC-promoted mantra to get the public to think all is lost, so might as well vote Democrat.

This is the same tactic used in predicting Floriduh for AlGore, before the Panhandle voting booths had closed, so Republican voters supposedly would hear it on their car radios on their way to the still-open polling places after work, and turn around and go home without voting.....

It ain't over til it's over, but the missteps by the GOP leadership continue to make this harder.
