But that requires you to intercede. There is no automatic archival of Instant Messages like email. It is because of the real-time nature of Instant Messaging.

True, however it is still considered an IM that was saved.
I also still have ims (not word docs) on an old computer that I have not used for some time. I do not recall doing anything to save them or delete them, but they are there.
