Prophet not perfect, says Islamic scholar
The Australian ^ | 4th October 2006 | Richard Kerbaj

A LEADING adviser on Islam, Ameer Ali, has attacked Muslims who "blindly" follow their faith and fail to question the veracity of the Koran, saying that even Mohammed had "flaws".

The chairman of John Howard's Muslim advisory board yesterday warned that Islamists would continue to breed jihadis unless the Koran was "reinterpreted" for today's society.

He also said mosques were increasingly being used by imams to deliver sermons that were not open to discussion.

Dr Ali said the majority of Muslim clerics had for centuries imposed a "literalist" teaching of Islam, telling their followers that deviating from the written message would ultimately lead to their admission into hell.

"The times are changing and with the change of times, you also have to reinterpret the Koran," he told The Australian.

"Because if you believe that it's a book for all the times and all the nations, then that book must be yielding new meanings.

"There are verses about slavery, and the Koran says you must be kind to the slaves. So are the Muslims saying we must have slavery to be kind?

"The jihadists are interpreting the Koran literally and that's the problem ... Popular Muslims, because of their lack of knowledge about religion, are vulnerable to these sort of teachings."

Dr Ali, who is writing an academic paper entitled "Closing of the Muslim Mind", said even Mohammed was not the "perfect model" as most Muslims believed. Asked if the prophet had character flaws, he said: "Of course - you must look at him as a human being also."

1001 fatwas issued thus far...and counting.

Seriously, this man needs to be protected, finally someone with the guts to speak the truth about the 'prophet.'

This guy may want to slip on a viking hat and change his name to Olaf if he wants to live past tomorrow.

Olaf Ameer Ali? Think it will fool the jihadists?

Something tells me this guy isn't going to live very long.

He doesn't have to worry about anything. Islam is the Religion of Peace. That's what our President says, so it must be true.

A book about 40 guys wrote over hundreds of years, yet it fits together perfectly. The Word of God.

"I'm a Christian so yes the Bible is true"

So you believe the bible to be true therefore it is true? That's one amazing ego you have there.

No, I'm an atheist so I don't believe in an inherent concept of perfection. Of course you weren't around Muhammad to know whether he was perfect or not.

So you're saying the Catholic church did a good job of editing?

So you believe the Bible is not true so it is not true.
Talk about ego.

Your arguments are stupid so far as you have implicated yourself as a victem of your own logic.

Mohammed was a Prophet, not the Son of God; a man, not an angel. This is, anyway, a basic teaching of Islam. Ironically, they idolize him more by refusing to let him be portrayed physically than by allowing this. They treat him as though HE were the angel Gabriel.

Al-Ghazali with his literalist Koran and Hadiths only approach to everything from epistemology to law prevailed of the rationalism of Averroes.

Averroes, or later-day spiritual and intellectual descendants would have responded to the Pope's address and Regensberg with a learned disquisition based on both faiths' scriptures and Aristotle. The later-day descendant of Al-Ghazali riot and issue threats of murder.

"This is too bad.... Jesus was perfect." Still is.
Nope. Never was. He plainly supported the authority of the law and the prophets, yet he plainly refused to honour the mitzvot or the sages in practice, and commanded his followers--tax collectors, i.e. Roman quislings and oppressors of the Jews among them--to do the same. He seemed particularly hostile to Shabbot, the most sacred of Jewish observances. Not to mention his hostility to the temple services.

OK. So I will allow that he was the perfect gentile, whatever that means, because he certaily hated all things Jewish, and I can hardly blame him since the Jews of Judea didn't regard their Galilean cousins as Jewish (and rightly so, as their paternity was disputed). So he must have been hurt that the establishment never accepted him. But he was never the perfect Jew.

I'm unchurched and a bit ignorant. Did Jesus ever claim to be perfect? Does it say somewhere in scripture by someone else that "he is/was perfect?" Or are you just saying so? Not meaning to start a problem. Thanks.
