Actress Kirsten Dunst has come under fire from historians for her "frightful" interpretation of tragic French queen Marie Antoinette. Dunst plays the 18th Century monarch in Sofia Coppola's racy new biopic, which was booed by critics at this year's Cannes Film Festival. Now her overtly sexual performance has been attacked by France's Marie Antoinette Association as well, who insists the queen's bedroom antics are not factually based. The association's president Michele Lorin says, "I've seen the trailer for the film on the internet. It is a fright. We've spent years trying to convince people that the queen was not just a libertine who told the starving to eat cake. What do you see on the trailer? You see Marie Antoinette eating cake. You see her lying naked on a chaise longue. I fear the film is going to set us back many years." However, Dunst retorts the movie should not be taken too seriously. She says, "It's kind of like a history of feelings rather than a history of facts. So don't expect a masterpiece theatre, educational Marie Antoinette biopic."
The subject queen never said, "let them eat cake." That is an urban legend.
I agree. Facts don't count. The only important thing is the writer and director's artistic interpretation of a historical character. When people go to see historical flicks, they want to at least know they are seeing a true representation of the real people, not "kinda of like history".
"It's kind of like a history of feelings rather than a history of facts"
Wow...typical Hollywood blabber that means absolutely nothing.
So Kirstin Dunst is naked in this? Sounds like time for me to get my historical fiction on...
I hope that one's not a historical hatchet job as this one seems to be.
And it may be just a feeling but I suspect that for some it's a fact that smarts aren't necessary for success!!
well, that's just a little bigger than intended, sorry.
I knew the movie was doomed the minute I saw who was cast as Marie Antoinette.
But it works out OK cuz it's easier to make out the details.
Then they should've attacked the casting of Kirsten Dunst in the role as well, since she doesn't look anything like Marie Antoinette. Damned hypocrites. Make the let-'em-eat-cake-lady look good and they say nothing. Make her look bad and they scream.
"Awesome, oh wow! Like, totally freak me out! I mean, right on! The Toros sure are number one!" (Bring It On)
LOL...thanks I haven't laughed that hard at a one-liner in quite a while...I needed that.
It's alright, it's OK, you're going to pump our gas someday!
I have 3 cheerleader daughters.
Translation: "We in Hollywood are pathologically incapable of telling the truth, or of grasping historical epic." Zanuck, DeMille, Griffith -- THEY understood grandeur. Today's Hollywood is so gutter-bound it can't conceive of anything beyond the carnal.
I can't think of Kirsten Dunst without being reminded of the notorious anagram of her name that's making the rounds, and which I can't repeat here.
LOL I want to see the sequel. I'm so ashamed.
If it has Kirsten Dunst in an overtly sexual performance, it could have spaceships and Ronald McDonald in it and I'll still see it
