If this was just a prank, then why the heck would Foley have resigned immediately? Doesn't add up.

I'm not sure, but my guess would be that the "prank" was played on Foley himself. He probably engaged in the IM's thinking they were legit and the pages were just yankin' his chain.

This was my thought when they were first talking about conversations via IM. You'd be surprised what teens say to each other -much of it being in jest. The scenario of this guy sitting around the computer with a bunch of his buddies, laughing their @sses off seeing just how far they can get this old pervert to go is not out of the realm of possibility.

According to two people close to former congressional page Jordan Edmund, the now famous lurid AOL Instant Message exchanges that led to the resignation of Mark Foley were part of an online prank that by mistake got into the hands of enemy political operatives, the DRUDGE REPORT can reveal.

According to one Oklahoma source who knows the former page very well, Edmund, a conservative Republican, goaded Foley to type embarrassing comments that were then shared with a small group of young Hill politicos. The prank went awry when the saved IM sessions got into the hands of political operatives favorable to Democrats. This source, an ally of Edmund, also adamantly reports that the former page is not a homosexual. The prank scenario was confirmed by a second associate of Edmund.

The news come on the heels that former FBI Chief Louis Free has been named to investigate the mess.

Can Foley unstep down?

Probably not, but his name is still on the ballot. The district probably can revoke the new guy and let Foley run for his open seat again since he did win the primary, but why would they? He's still damaged goods, unless you think there will be a groundswell of sympathy for him in his district.

Foley resigned because he pretended to be someone he was not. Remember the Republicans have a higher standard.
