That's nothing! Here in Portland they went crazy and started fighting with police. Being Portland there are 1000 people at the event, and a few dozen are apparently "black block" anarchists. It ended with tear-gassing and trunchons. YEA! Go PDX-Police!
There's a difference here, generally speaking, between foolish liberals on the one hand, and ideological hard-leftists on the other.
Liberals are as you describe. The are "soft Utopians" who fantasize about reality causing them to be utterly feckless regarding the defense and preservation of the hard won principles and institutions on which their own liberty and prosperity is based.
Committed leftist-extremists, OTOH, are generally not sappy about reality. Notwithstanding their abstruse ideologies designed to transform black to white and up to down -- to paint free, liberal societies and their contributing members as fonts of oppression, and barbarous, aggressive thugocracies and their willing minions as helpless victims -- they are at heart very hardheaded about reality.
The difference is that they don't stop, like airhead liberals, at merely being disappointed in reality failing to mirror their unrealistic ideals. They proceed to nurture a deep and existential HATRED of reality.
This is because political extremism (both left and right, btw) is invariably tied up with Utopianism. Your sappy liberal thinks Utopia can be approximated if only everyone would sit down together around the campfire and sign a few rounds of "Kum-bay-yah". Your hard-leftist isn't satisfied with any approximation of Utopia. He or she "knows" that the Utopia can only be achieved by a TOTAL commitment: by an absolutist (totalist, totalitarian) implementation of the one, true ideology.
There can be no compromise, nor can there be any evolution from any normal society to the Utopia. (Especially not starting out with a free, liberal society, which is why in truth the leftist-extremist disdains ordinary "liberals".) The existing world must be swept aside and destroyed. The Utopia can only be constructed on its ashes.
To put the distinction more briefly, non-extremist, but feckless, liberals are only intentioned and implicit nihilists. They don't appreciate the yawning chasms of death and destruction that are bridged by the structural traceries of the civilization they are so lucky to be part of, and they don't realize how their foolish prescriptions tear at those foundations. If they ever truly did understand all this they would be horrified. The hard-leftist, by contrast, DOES realize this. The hard-leftist is a conscious and intentional nihilist. The hard-leftist cannot be horrified.
Yeah, I noticed that, too. That guy in the black shirt with the mustache seemed like a decent enough guy who just didn't know what a bunch of psychos he was getting himself involved with (Though I'm sure listening to the incoherent shrieking of the guy with the sunglasses and Rastafarian hat gave him a hint).
Simply amazing how the dude from ANSWER thinks that most Americans would prefer a communist system to a capitalist one! Next time you run into him I think it would be good to remind him of the hundreds of millions of people that communism killed in the 20th century (Russia, China, Cambodia, North Korea, etc).

Actually, I did mention the 100 million deaths. It ended up on the cutting room floor, though. He countered with the Czarist death toll of the preceeding centuries.
Of course, nothing in the history of the world matches the commie death toll.
