Rell, DeStefano debate tonight at 8pm (Connecticut gubernatorial debate)

(New London-WTNH, Oct. 9, 2006 Updated 5:00 PM) -- The race for governor turns up a notch tonight with the first of just two face-to-face debates between Republican Governor Jodi Rell and Democratic challenger John DeStefano.

With a more than thirty percent lead in the last public opinion poll, Governor Jodi Rell has a lot to lose.

She'll be making sure she makes no mistakes.

For New Haven Mayor John DeStefano, it is just one of two chances he'll get to stand next to the popular governor and explain why he thinks voters should fire her and hire him a month from tomorrow.

DeStefano proposes to double the state's property tax credit and has a major plan for universal health care.

He is especially critical of Rell's campaign ads that tout the state's job growth as being first in New England in the past two years. He says it's not so.

The Governor says she has been ahead of the curve on major issues, like funding for stem cell research, transportation, early childhood education, and the landmark ethics and campaign finance reform law.

Mayor John DeStefano says, (D) For Governor, says,"We have a governor who doesn't see the problems that this state is facing and it's time to elect leadership that will get things done."

"I don't know what to expect from my opponent on Monday. I expect to be the same person I've always been and that is to try to answer the questions that are posed to me," says Gov. Jodi Rell, (R) Connecticut.

Without my reading glasses, read it "gladiatorial". Gladiatorial would be better, at least as far as viewership ratings are concerned.

Great. The Stalinist versus the Den Mother. I can't wait to miss it. No worries; our liberal northeast Republican will win the race walking away.

DeStefano is a moron. Even a crappy Governor like Rell should have no problem with him.

How about "Janitorial" since Rell will wipe the floor with DeStefano's sorry ass.

I am no big fan of Rell but maybe I will vote for her just because I have never picked a winner in a gubernatorial election. In the last 4 elections I have gone with independent or minor party candidates. No, that doesn't include Weicker, who I loathe.

Anyway, DeStefano is not at all telegenic and has a whiny voice that I think most people will find unappealing. Hard to see how he wins this debate.

Destefano is a complete lunatic. His proposals are just whacked out. If you don't believe in the law of supply and demand, he may be your man, but otherwise, stay away.

I know... he can't even run his own FAILURE OF A CITY, New Haven! I think Rell is safe...

Not sure if you'd be interested in this, Graybeard. You can listen to the debate via streaming audio on WTIC 1080 AM.

A good friend of mine, who normally doesn't vote republican, says that if DeStefano gets elected, Connecticut will soon be longing for the good old days when John Rowlands was governor!!

Yep, a real shame. New Haven has so much going for it. Just needs a Giuliani-type who will tell the race-hustlers and commie libs to go screw.

Yeah, I know that it's not nice to judge someone by their looks, but I can't help thinking that DeStefano looks like an idiot. He's got the simpleton grin down pat...

Exactly... New Haven has so much potential... it's really a shame.

Giuliani took on the largest city in the country and succeeded brilliantly. DeStefano hasn't done a thing for New Haven that I can see. Looks like the same 'ol crime-ridden dump year after year, with the exception of the Yale campus of course.

That's good to hear! I've seen 'RAT signs on people's lawns that include Jodi Rell signs as well (rather than DeStefano). Very strange here in deep-blue Connecticut...

Perhaps we can have a beer or a slice sometime. Pizza House on Howe Street is not as storied as Franks et al, but oh what pizza.
