I read that Captain Cook had difficulty keeping his ships together in the Hawaian Islands because the crew kept trading nails for sexual favors from the native females.

IIRC he had to send out shore parties to retrieve the nails. That must have led to some resentment.

On a silly note . . . I wonder ... if there really were visitors from other solar systems ... and if they were at all like us . . .

. . .what would they trade to us -- and what would they want in exchange?

Yes, in those days there was a limited supply of one commodity and an infinite supply of the other.

Misjudging the value based solely on the quantity is always an error.
