IIRC he had to send out shore parties to retrieve the nails. That must have led to some resentment.
On a silly note . . . I wonder ... if there really were visitors from other solar systems ... and if they were at all like us . . .
. . .what would they trade to us -- and what would they want in exchange?

Yes, in those days there was a limited supply of one commodity and an infinite supply of the other.
Misjudging the value based solely on the quantity is always an error.
