Gingrich warns of third world war, dictators

Former U.S. Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich headlined a luncheon in downtown Bakersfield Monday, stumping for congressional candidate and California Assemblyman Kevin McCarthy.

He warned a third World War is coming and the United States needs to take the fight to the terrorists and dictatorships.

"We have real enemies," he said. "If they can get a nuclear or biological weapon they will use it."

Gingrich suggested running three national emergency response drills each year to simulate nuclear strikes or chemical weapon attacks on a major American city.

That should convince the American public that the threat must be met head-on.

But Gingrich counseled a "nonviolent" response to the testing of a nuclear weapon by North Korea on Sunday.

Any transfer of nuclear material or technology out of North Korea, however, should be considered an act of war, he said. But, he added, U.S. ally South Korea is too close to North Korea to risk a full-scale war.

The United States needs to stop polite talks with North Korea and start smuggling food and satellite phones to its citizens, who are starving under an evil regime, Gingrich said.

"We should focus our energy on helping the people of North Korea liberate themselves from a government which, I think it's fair to say, is stunningly destructive," he said.

Gingrich spoke Monday before a ballroom full of Republican faithful at the Holiday Inn Select.

The event was designed to raise money and support for McCarthy's campaign against Democrat Sharon Berry.

Gingrich also preached against the Supreme Court control of prayer in schools and the use of the word "God" in the Pledge of Allegiance.

He advocated for education in the prison system and school reform.

"Schools exist for the children, not the bureaucracy," he said. "Every school that is cheating the children needs to be changed today."

And he remarked on the high quality of Congressman Bill Thomas, R-Bakersfield's career and said McCarthy will be a great replacement.

McCarthy said Gingrich "belongs in the category of exceptional."

Gingrich said McCarthy "will be a very effective, very practical and very successful member of the U.S. House."

The discussion never got to the topic of Rep. Mark Foley and his resignation in the wake of the release of transcripts of his online sex talks with teenage congressional pages.

Gingrich has previously said Republicans need to take control of the situation, which threatens their control of the House in November's election. A major series of losses could give Democrats control of the House for the first time since Gingrich helped Republicans seize it in 1994.

But he didn't talk about the issue during the afternoon luncheon and left a brief news conference after the lunch after just a few brief questions from reporters.

"The United States needs to ... start smuggling food and satellite phones to its citizens ... Gingrich said."

And start broadcasting the real news to the PRNK.

It appears increasingly to me that it will be a war fought by proxy as the Hizbollah fought Israel. Hope we learn how to fight such a war effectively.

“Gingrich suggested running three national emergency response drills each year to simulate nuclear strikes or chemical weapon attacks on a major American city. That should convince the American public that the threat must be met head-on.”

That's NOT... meeting the threat head-on. That's called bracing for an attack... the scope of which you can't effectively predict/prepare for.

Newt... you're thinking Maginot Line!

Newt isn't stupid; he knows that at least Cuba has had biological weapons for decades. Delivery is a no-brainer: smuggled cocaine. It's a matter of when they think they can get away with it, not a matter of if they get them.

That is what we are learning how to do now, in Afghanistan, Iraq and Africa.

Newt's "world war" theme is one of those that must be proven correct by unfolding events (5,10,20 years) (because he is so convinced of it and so convinced he must convince others), that he will, in time, stand as a Churchill, or else he has already had his greatest public role.

I am a mugwump on Newt and his theme; while I simultaneously believe that most of Washington D.C. and most GOP and Dim leaders do not understand clearly all the threats we face. I guess I am not convinced that events will require a simultaneous WWII-style response to all of them.

Cuba is not full of fanatics who think that being a martyr in the war against the "Great Satan" will win them a front row seat in heaven. Castro is evil, but not suicidal. I am not so sure the same can be said of the Jihadists.

Cut off the head of the snake and it dies. The head is Iran and Syria in the case of Hezbollah.

They are ready to pile on and deliver a death blow at the first opportunity.

Only if they think that they can do so and still survive. Islamic extremists are not concerned about their own survival as long as they can inflict damage on the Infidel.

However, our CD system currently sucks. Years of denial of the value of CD will do that. He has a good point here.

We need two different CD drills. One for people who actually believe there's a threat and one for the people who believe, if We just talk to them, they won't attack us. (Dims)
