A Russian woman journalist was shot Oct. 7 in her apartment block in central Moscow and therein lies a story with a moral. Anna Politkovskaya, 48, mother of two, was an outspoken critic of President Vladimir Putin. According to the Reuters obituary, Mrs. Politkovskaya won international fame and numerous prizes for her exposes of rights abuses by Mr. Putin's government. The Moscow chief prosecutor told reporters at the crime scene that he was treating the death as murder. Her murder came on the day Putin celebrated his 54th birthday.

From Novaya Gazeta:
http://2006.novayagazeta.r u/nomer/2006/78n/n78n-s00.shtml

WE SAW OFF ANYA

Thousands of people arrived to give their last respects to the brutally murdered journalist. (Our colleagues in journalism from other papers wrote about 'hundreds' coming to Anya's funeral, but in truth there were thousands). People came, following the commands of their hearts and consciences.
Dozens of ambassadors from very significant foreign states, as well as ordinary people, stood next to each other in the hall of farewells. All were able to say their final goodbye. (We express our appreciation to the organizers of this sad ceremony). The hall, designed for 500, could only hold a thousand. The rest waited patiently, in order to prevent a crush. The government dispatched a deputy cultural minister.
Our last bow to Anya lasted two hours. There were no hysterics, even though strength and nerves were stretched to the limit. There were no problems, despite the huge crowd. (The special police, who came at our request to maintain order, had nothing to do.) Several dozen journalists, from Russia and the rest of the world (and this is not a figure of speech) behaved very correctly. The relatives of Anya asked that there not be a single photographer or television camera at the funeral. .
Last Tuesday all of us, without exception, bid this person farewell.

A brave Christian lady was laid to rest. She is in the presence of the Lord now, and nobody can harm her now.

Anna Politkovskaya awarded with international literary prize posthumously
Home Society

Journalist Anna Politkovskaya was awarded with Tiziano Terzani International Literary Prize 2007. As Radio Liberty informs, the decision was made unanimously to mark rare moral courage of Anna Politkovskaya, who paid her life for criticism of power abuse.

The award ceremony is to be held on May 12 in Udine, Italy. The award will be presented to Novaya Gazeta newspaper Editor-in-Chief Dmitry Muradov.

Tiziano Terzani was one of outstanding Italian journalists, who had worked abroad for a long time, first of all, in Asian countries. After 9/11 tragedy he published Letters against the War book. Tiziano Terzani International Literary Prize was established in 2004. It is awarded for works, where acute problems of the West-East relations are raised.

As REGNUM informed earlier, Novaya Gazeta columnist Anna Politkovskaya was shot down in the entrance of her block of flats, where she rented an apartment, on October 7 in Moscow. Some evidences prove it was a contract murder.
