I've opened this thread as a clearing house of information related to various judicial candidates in CA on the ballot for the Nov 2006 election. Feel free to add to it.
In a lengthy piece the SacBee reports "Corrigan has written four unanimous opinions. One that said a father could be required to comply with a foreign child-support order made 17 years earlier. She also has produced one dissent and one separate concurring opinion."
Also of note from that above piece, "Certainly Corrigan's most significant recent achievement was the completion of an eight-year project in which teams of legal scholars under her leadership translated the state's jury instructions into commonly understood terms."
On your ballot is CA Supreme Court Assoc Justice Joyce L. Kennard. She was appointed March 11, 1989, by California Governor George Deukmejian (R).
In 2004 Kennard cast a dissenting vote, supporting legal recognition of San Francisco's same-sex marriage licenses. She did agree to review a lower court decision that struck down a parental consent law back in 1994 but ultimately sided with the majority which affirmed the lower court ruling. Further details at the SacBee link above.
Ping your lists, add info you find helpful to deciding how to vote on these often stealth candidates.
The sanctions were against United States Justice Foundation for filing an allegedly frivolous motion to dismiss a lawsuit brought by James McElroy on behalf of Planned Parenthood of San Diego and Riverside Counties. Enright, the judge in the case, "later said he regretted his decision, but the appeals-court judges were unswayed by that fact..."
In the suit, Planned Parenthood of San Diego and Riverside Counties sought an injunction against a pro-life protester for allegedly harassing employees and customers of a San Diego-area clinic. Freepers may recognize attorney McElroy as the atheist's attorney from the Mt. Soledad War Memorial legal battle.
Huffman argued that the Hazelwood principle should apply at the college level, giving administrators virtually complete control over the content of student productions that are related to the curriculum. Huffman wrote:
"The majority unfortunately has snatched that authority (to control the curriculum) from (administrators') hands and given it over to individual faculty... and students. All of this is done in pursuit of academic freedom. Respectfully, the majority opinion will permit in matters of curriculum content the faculty tail to wag the administration dog. In my view, this sets a bad policy which I hope will not long endure." Morror Bay Law Presentation
Would you be so kind as to list each judicial candidate? I've not received a sample ballot so have no idea who's on the ballot.
I have always had qualms about women jurists (and female politicians, too). Although I think I'd make a fine judge myself, I'm not so sure about the rest of them. (With this kind of thinking, do you get my point?)
My boss recently went before a female judge who wouldn't let him say much of anything in defense of his client and spent the short period of time he was before her yelling and screaming at him. He was there to try to save a child from going into the "system," but apparently she wasn't interested in hearing what he had to say.
And there's not a damn thing anyone can do about it. So the kid went into a juvenile detention "home," with fine upstanding citizens standing there begging the judge (or trying to, anyway, unfortunately the judge wouldn't shut up long enough to hear what they had to say) to let them take the kid.
Granted, men judges can be unreasonable, too, but they aren't at the mercy of fluctuating hormones and menopause, and female irrationality.
Flame away ladies!
CA Supreme Court:
Joyce L. Kennard,
Carol A. Corrigan.
Fourth Appellate (San Diego, Riverside, Orange County):
Judith McConnell,
Patricia D. Benke,
Richard D. Huffman,
Judith L. Haller,
Cynthia G. Aaron,
Joan K. Irion,
Art W. McKinster,
Betty A. Richli,
Jeffrey King,
Douglas P. Miller,
Kathleen E. O'Leary,
Raymond J. Ikola.
In San Diego, Office #36 of the Superior Court has two candidates in a run-off:
Larry "Jake" Kincaid,
Rod Shelton.
There may be additional/different local judges across the state.
In a case where a member of the Israel Zion Coptic Church claimed his possession of large quantities of marajuana were covered by his religious freedom (the accused was known to share it with non-IZCC members, including children), Richli wrote, "It is a criminal offense to distribute marijuana, whether or not for profit The elimination of traffic of illegal drugs is a compelling state interest The court reasonably could conclude that is not restrained from association with users of marijuana, defendant would continue to distribute marijuana, both within and without his church." details here
In another case, Richli wrote an opinion for a decision which struck down a law giving cops the right to sue for defamation if someone fires a false complaint. A law like section 47.5, which poses a risk of chilling citizens exercise of their right to complain of official misconduct, therefore must be justified by a governmental interest that is truly compelling...
Presumably, that is why, apparently, no state other than California has elected to single out defamation of peace officers for disparate treatment...
For Your Information - In the San Diego County elections, Judicial Candidate Larry "Jake" Kincaid has been endorsed by the Republican Party. His opponent, Rod Shelton, has been endorsed by LA RAZA and the ACLU. Please make the appropriate choice on election day - it shouldn't be too hard to decide.
Here are some more judicial candidates up for retention, along with some party affiliations and nominating governor names (which I did not verify), according to Ventura County Republican Central Committee website.
The VCRCC basically endorsed Republicans and recommended "no" votes for Democrats.
Among these judges up for retention, only Gov. Schwarzenegger nominated judges from the opposite major party.
Vote Yes or No for each judge.

Here is a website that I have found very useful in the past. The judicial races are not posted yet, but it will probably be worthwhile checking back closer to the election.

Apparently he is the former prosecutor who pursued the case against then San Diego Mayor Roger Hedgecock, a case won on jury tampering by a bailiff and ultimately overturned by the CA state supreme court.

The judges on the panel were Presiding Justice Candace Cooper, Associate Justice Laurence D. Rubin, Associate Justice Paul Boland
(Thanks, calcowgirl!)
All three were appointed by Governor Grey Davis.

Dear Auntie,
I echo your request for a listing of judicial candidates and a few snippets about their respective philosophies. I also share your reservations about female judges, but coming from me its simply sexist ! Is this another match in the gasoline can? :)
Newzjunkie posted the judges above, but it still doesn't help if you don't know anything about them. I know nothing about any of them and I intend to not vote or vote no on all of them. I wrote a "How to Vote" article once upon a time and here's my section on how to vote for judges:
Voting for judges is extremely important and most of us don't have a clue who these people are and what they stand for. Once a judge is elected, it is almost impossible to get them off the bench and after enough elections, they simply cannot be removed, no matter how bad they are. They usually don't campaign and to most of us they are just a name on a page.
Here's a scary statistic for you: the California Judicial Council (the governing body for judges) has been in existence since 1961. Since it's inception--42 years--guess how many judges have been removed for impropriety? Nine! That's not a typo, in 42 years the governing body for California judges has only seen fit to remove nine judges. These numbers don't lie.
Once a judge, ALWAYS A JUDGE.
If you don't know them, LEAVE IT BLANK or vote no. Let the ones who do know make that important decision. There are ways to educate yourself about judges on the ballot and one of the best ways is to ask a lawyer friend. They are the ones at the courthouse every day and they see the judges in action. If you trust your lawyer friend's judgment take his advice. Again, if you don't know, LEAVE IT BLANK.
--If you want to read the entire article, click on my name and visit my FR page.
"rogerhedgecock.com" identifies who appointed whom.(who/whom?)
It also links to "www.ss.ca.gov/elections/elections_justice" which gives all the sanitized information fit to print. Like a resume, not an investigative piece.
I'v added 'COURTSOFAPPEALDist4' to the key words.
All the CA Freepers in districts 1,2,3,5,6 need to get on the ball!
It's a little worse than you site, only 5 removals by the commission. But the dates on the removals are all since 2000. On the other hand they sure like to Censure, Admonish and Reprove.
Good Find! I'm going to book mark that one.

Thanks, BoneHead, for this information. I will fix my article and the judicial section. It's been over two years since I've re-read it and I notice it needs a lot of work. Guess I needed some distance to find more flaws.
You remarked that they sure like to censure, admonish and reprove. I respectfully disagree. If you actually add up the names of those they've censured, admonished and reproved, and consider how MANY judge's there actually are and have been in this state since 1960, and remember, that's 46 years (and I don't know the number but it has to be in the 10-30 thousand range, that's not very many censures, admonishments and reprovals considering how many judge's there are and have been.
Anyway, I'm just splitting hairs here. Thanks again for the Commission on Judicial Performance website link. I'd tried to find it in the past with no luck. You're a gem!
That will raise some lawyers blood pressure.....

Los Angeles GOP recommends Judges for Superior Court, where there are choices ( not just yes or no):
Judges of the Superior Court:
#8: D. Sanchez,
#18: D. Mitchell,
#102: H. Zacky,
#144: D. Stuart
The judicial races are posted and I checked mine with Robyn's and I had picked the same. I'm Appellate District 4, Divs 1-3.
I started by using this website to see if and whose campaigns these judges donated.
http://www.newsmeat.com/
Then I found this thread and finished up. Thanks for that link. I feel much better about my choices. Now to send everything to all my family so they can vote correctly. They depend on me every election and now I've come to depend on much more knowledgable Freepers. Thanks everyone!
Just a heads-up to other FReepers in District 1. The website http://www.savecalifornia.com is reporting that William R. McGuiness is the judge who recently upheld marriage for a man and a woman and said in his decision that judges should not be rewriting marriage laws. He is reportedly being targeted for defeat by homosexual activists.
So please vote YES on William R. McGuiness.
From Robyn's blog, here are the California Republican Lawyers Association recommendations for Yes votes in District 1:
COURTS OF APPEAL DISTRICT 1
JAMES MARCHIANO - Appointed by Gov. Deukmajian
PAUL HAERLE Appointed by Gov. Wilson
WILLIAM McGUINESS Appointed by Gov. Wilson
PETER SIGGINS Appointed by Gov. Schwarzenegger.
IGNAZIO RUVOLO Appointed by Gov. Schwarzenegger.
PATRICIA SEPULVEDA - Appointed by Governor Wilson.
BARBARA JONES Appointed by Gov. Wilson
Thanks for the 'when not to vote' wisdom (post #30) on your own page - I've forwarded it to my address book.
This is great stuff, thank you!
Yikes, McGuiness is up in the San Fran Sick-o area...doesn't stand a chance against the gay mafia.

California Republican Lawyers Association Announces Judicial Endorsements
by Mike Houston - Political Law 10-26-2006 4:37 pm
The influential California Republican Lawyers Association has announced its endorsements for the retention votes for appellate judges. Judicial elections in California are often well below the radar screen and many voters have no idea who they are voting for. In fact, many people tell me that they often do not vote in judicial elections because they know so little about the judges on the ballot.
The CRLA endorsement list (below) is helpful because not only does it provide the CRLA's weight to identifying judges worthy of Republican support but it provides the Governor who appointed the particular judge.
Here is the text of the CRLA press release and the endorsements:
CALIFORNIA REPUBLICAN LAWYERS MAKE JUDICIAL RECOMMENDATIONS.
Dear Fellow Republican:
Every year Republican voters complain about the lack of information regarding Judges appearing on their ballots. In an attempt to provide Republican voters with the information they need, the California Republican Lawyers Association have prepared a list of Justices that we recommend.
It is important to point out that in preparing this list we have researched judicial opinions, considered party registration, considered what Governor appointed each Justice, the length of service and spoke to lawyers who have practiced before them. We considered all of these factors in preparing our recommendations. No one factor was dispositive. Furthermore, certain Justices do not appear on our list because their time on the Supreme Court or Court of Appeals has been too brief.
The following list is the result of this research. To learn more about the California Republican Lawyers Association you can visit our website at www.californiarepublicanlawyers.org.

If you think Judges are a non-partisan office, you would be technically correct. But in reality, as attested to by rulings of the 9th Circuit Court, we have judges trying to write the law from the bench. Many of these judges worked their way up through California Courts. We are working to get Judges elected that will rule fairly based on the constitution and existing law. These races are L.A. County wide.Judicial Recommendations:Office No. 8: Bob HenryOffice No. 18: Daviann L. Mitchell*Office No. 102: Hayden ZackyOffice No. 104: Leave BlankOffice No. 144: David W. I know she was painted as a "moderate" when Arnold appointed her.
