For more than a decade, one piece of Senator Hillary Rodham Clintons informal biography has been that she was named for Sir Edmund Hillary, the conqueror of Mount Everest. The story was even recounted in Bill Clintons autobiography.
But yesterday, Mrs. Clintons campaign said she was not named for Sir Edmund after all.
It was a sweet family story her mother shared to inspire greatness in her daughter, to great results I might add, said Jennifer Hanley, a spokeswoman for the campaign.
In May 1953, Sir Edmund and his Sherpa guide, Tenzing Norgay, became the first men to reach the summit of Mount Everest. In 1995, shortly after meeting Sir Edmund, Mrs. Clinton said that her mother, Dorothy Rodham, had long told her she was named for the famous mountaineer.
It had two ls, which is how she thought she was supposed to spell Hillary, Mrs. Clinton said at the time, after meeting Sir Edmund. So when I was born, she called me Hillary, and she always told me its because of Sir Edmund Hillary.
Even though Bill Clinton repeated the story in his 2004 autobiography, My Life, Hillary Clinton did not mention it in her own autobiography, Living History,
But one big hole has been poked in the story over the years, both in cyberspace and elsewhere: Sir Edmund became famous only after climbing Everest in 1953. Mrs. Clinton, as it happens, was born in 1947.

Ping
Big decision. Should I register with the NY times so I can read more about Hillary Clinton? No, not today.
No Tenzing ping today.
Well Bill had no problem repeating one of his infinite number of standard lies (in the 2004 gook) despite the fact it had been publically exposed as such well back in the 1990s.
Interesting the Clinton's/Rodham's have so many 'sweet stories'. My family calls such things by other names.
I think this week's we are calling them 'Rat Senator land deals'.
Finally, after all these years, long after we knew, the New York Times exposes one of the many Hillary lies. And what does Hillary do?
She spins the lie into an innocent, sweet tale of Motherly love.
There's a lot of cleaning up to do, so best to get an early start. Two years of 24/7 clean up duty years ought to just about do it.
Why did Bill and Hillary keep this lie going till now, and even place it in their books, when it was exposed the same day years back when it was said? Scary, that people actually believe their own lies. More scary, that people believe anything the Clintons say.
To me this means that she comes from a long line of liars.
Ecch! I just had breakfast, and it's coming back up . . .
I'm happy, she's so gay - especially with this BS story..
Where's that darn Bubba bridge anyway?
Hillary. Having been caught telling a lie about the origin of her name, she compounds the error by not only telling another lie but doing so in a manner which makes her mother seem like the liar. Fine daughter you have there Mrs. Rodham.
"It was a sweet family story her mother shared to inspire greatness in her daughter"
Like a LYING POS mother, like a LYING POS daughter! Two evil peas in a pod!
LLS
Next thing you know, she'll be claiming to be a female homo sapiens.
So when Billious put down the atomic football, and gave algore an atomic wedgie, he was just looking for the union label?
Yeah... by 2008 this will be "old news"... let's move on... Nice to see that Hillary was brought up with a mother lying to inspire her from the get-go. Fits the life story very well.
"Why did Bill and Hillary keep this lie going till now, and even place it in their books, when it was exposed the same day years back when it was said? Scary, that people actually believe their own lies. More scary, that people believe anything the Clintons say."
Because they think no one is looking and they sweep one of their many, many, many lies under the rug.
Well, she'd be at least 66% accurate.
What about the other 18,523 lies the Clintons have told the past 20 years or so?
