Law-enforcement authorities along the U.S.-Mexico border are outgunned and outmanned by drug smugglers armed with automatic weapons, grenade launchers, bazookas, improvised explosive devices and state-of-the-art communications and tracking systems, a congressional report said yesterday. "While the United States has taken positive steps to secure its borders, much more is needed to combat an increasingly powerful, sophisticated, organized and violent criminal network, which seeks to move illegal contraband ... into our country for profit," said the House Homeland Security management, integration and oversight subcommittee report.

Duh, smuggling is a very profitable, big business. It amazes me when people are surprised that smugglers operate their organizations intelligently, yet don't think twice when Wal-Mart comes up with better ways to cut costs and increase efficiency.

When Prohibition spawned gangsterism ala Al Capone, Prohibition was eventually rescinded. Marijuana is less harmful than alcohol, yet we're prepared to spend trillions making sure drug smugglers have a steady source of income rather than commit the obvious.

Every time I read this I get angrier. WTF? Our D.C. leadership is presented with this report and it gets ignored? Has anyone seen any feedback, comment, anything from anyone in the Administration?

Our border should have been militarized on 9/12. If an attack occurs as a result of this neglect, Bush and company get what they deserve. I got sick and tired of trying to defend the man a long time ago. THIS is indefensible.
