I suppose there can be coexistence with non-doctrinaire Muslims as a subculture (see Dearborn, MI, though it's very clear that not nearly all of those Muslims are free from Islamism) but how in the world could any non-Muslim nation think that Muslims would ever wish to be "assimilated" into their national culture?

Just musing at your expense.

I support the idea of teaching young Spanish Muslims about Islam in Spanish.

"I support the idea of teaching young Spanish Muslims about Islam in Spanish"

Of course you do.

Do it on your own dime.

It would be difficult as:
  1. I am not affluent.
  2. I am not Muslim.
  3. I do not speak fluent Spanish.

But, I think someone who is wealthy, Muslim, and a (near) native speaker of Spanish can do it on his own dime.

"It would be difficult as:

Really, why do I care and it doesn't matter.

This is a PUBLIC school. Paid for by the citizens of Spain.

How many schools in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, etc. teach Christian children about Christianity.?

None of couse.
But, I think someone who is wealthy, Muslim, and a (near) native speaker of Spanish can do it on his own dime."

Let the wealthy muslim pay for their child's religious education on their own dime...

Get it?

Of course I get it.

You ask me to pay for something, and then claim that you don't care what I do. Well, if you asked me to do something in the first place, then you obviously did care.

And, I'm not sure whether or not any predominantly Muslim country in the Middle East has a schol that teaches Christian children about Christianity in that nation's language.

It's a horrible idea. The book was written by the Spanish equivalent of CAIR, and the press that published it, owned by the Marists, is ultra-liberal and announced that it was doing this to encourage Islam in Spain. Catholics in Spain are, needless to say, pretty upset by this idiotic remark.

Furthermore, the government paid the entire cost of these books. Not only are there way more books than needed, but they are going to be sold through the mosques, which will be allowed to keep the entirety of the purchase price. Books for Catholic religious ed, on the other hand, are paid for mostly by the Church and are sold through school and other regular book stores, with no profit going to the Church.

Religious ed is offered as a weekly class in public schools in Spain, with an ethics option for kids who are not religious. Something like 85% of Spanish families request it for their kids; however, in the last couple of years, as an attempt to discourage kids from taking it, the Socialists have removed its grading and standing as a regular class.

Zapatero is famed for his attempts to promote Islam. He is a leftist atheist himself, but he sees Islam as a way to attack the Church, which he regards as his arch-enemy. The title of the book, by the way, is "Getting to Know Islam"(in Spanish, of course) and it is obviously designed for use not just for Muslim students but for some future "introductory" classes on Islam for non-Muslims.

Well, then it is a bad idea.

When the conservatives get back in power, they should consider my idea. :-)

No, you don't.

"And, I'm not sure whether or not any predominantly Muslim country in the Middle East has a schol that teaches Christian children about Christianity in that nation's language."

This statement proves you haven't a clue. No, there are NOT any muslim countries that even allow Christians rights on par with muslims...Christianity is NOT allowed to be taught at ALL in the madrassas. Do you read?

"You ask me to pay for something, and then claim that you don't care what I do. Well, if you asked me to do something in the first place, then you obviously did care."

What? Don't bother me...you lack the capacity for rational discussion.

Correct!
Sometimes the river, ocean or moat is what kept the good people safe.
If there were no land or sea bariers to expansion, the world would be swept by waves of conquerors from which there would be no escape.England nor the US. could have developed independence in a barier=free world..

Careful who is on the other end of the bridge!

CAIR and The Marists, together.

As they say in Hollywood, you couldn't write this stuff.

I happened to be in Spain last week when this was announced. The average Spanish man-in-the-street was not happy.

I commend your ability at taking my statements out of context. You do a very good job at this.

As far as I know, a madrasah is nothing more than an Arabic word for school. Madrasahs can thus be secular or religious, public or private. Christianity could be taught in a public secular madrasah. I'm not sure.

Oh, and I really like how you couldn't understand my statement, accused me of lacking the capacity for rational discussion, and then walked away. Brilliant.

High school kid?

There is a preview button. In the future you might want to read what you've written before you post.

Could help you save face.

Go away...you are incapable of intelligent discussion. Don't waste my time.

I really like how you throw accusations around with no basis. It used to be rational discussion but now it's intelligent discussion.

You have excellent discussion skills. I commend you once again.
