Angelides steps up character attacks

Struggling to attract support, Democrat Phil Angelides has begun tearing into Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's personal character, suggesting Wednesday the Republican incumbent should respond to recall-era claims that he once groped and humiliated women.

Angelides, in a phone interview, said Schwarzenegger never fulfilled a promise he made during his 2003 recall campaign to review the groping allegations.

"It was the governor who told (former NBC anchor) Tom Brokaw on national news that he would fully look into this matter and tell the people what it was all about," Angelides said. "He was the one who made his commitment and didn't keep his promise."

It was the second straight day that Angelides reached into the 2003 playbook to attack Schwarzenegger.

On Tuesday, Angelides told dozens of Sacramento-area African American leaders that Schwarzenegger "was allegedly defending apartheid in South Africa" during the 1970s and 1980s. The accusation was based on statements Rick Wayne, an African American bodybuilder friend of Schwarzenegger, made to newspapers during the 2003 recall. The governor's campaign called Angelides' charge "baseless."

"Phil Angelides is a desperate man and his campaign is imploding," said Schwarzenegger campaign spokesman Matt David. "He began this week saying publicly that his flailing campaign would go down the path of character assassination, and true to his word, yesterday he called the governor a racist."

Schwarzenegger's campaign issued a letter Wednesday from muscle mogul Ben Weider, who said the governor in 1975 got him to pressure South Africa to desegregate the Mr. Olympia competition by threatening to protest the event otherwise.

Angelides also took issue with Schwarzenegger's settlement of a libel suit filed by a British talk-show host who during the recall told the Los Angeles Times that the actor groped her in 2000.

PSSST Phil. He's a liberal. His wife is a Kennedy. He's surrounded himself with Democrats. Save your breath. The media are going to give him a pass on scandals from here on out.

I think its more, Pssst Phil, Ahnold is a movie star. He has access to really cool celebrity parties. You phil have access to Dukakis lectures, Nancy Peloci Rants, and Harry Reid Real Estate Seminars.

The MSM wants access to parites where they might get "lucky." That means Ahrnold.

This is going to backfire badly on Angelides. Of course at this point he has nothing to lose, since he was already hopelessly behind. But there was already a lot of speculation that the Democratic turnout would be depressed by Angelides' poor performance at the top of the ticket. Now there will be some Democratic voters and many moderates who will be actively disgusted by Angelides' tactics, and that will depress the turnout even more. That increases the chances that downticket Republicans will be elected and that the many bad ballot measures will go down to defeat.

Phil Angelides is really desperate when he has to stoop to character assassination to catch up with Arnold. If you thought he was pathetic before, he's lowered the bar for the worst performance ascribed to a doomed gubernatorial bid.

From Bill Bradley, New West Notes
Angelides’ plight and behavior drew scorn from Democrats associated with statewide campaigns that are in trouble and that are free from trouble. But the most scathing public comment came from someone who does not have to deal with the Angelides campaign, Democratic strategist Garry South. The architect of Gray Davis’s two winning gubernatorial campaigns, as well as Steve Westly’s near miss in the June Democratic primary for governor is in full I-told-you-so mode, mincing few words.

Yes, the Angelides campaign and the candidate himself have now gone from merely inept and ineffectual to downright embarrassing and pathetic,” says South. “I can’t imagine knowing Democrats aren’t ashamed that this guy is our nominee for governor of the biggest state — and a deep blue one, at that. . . . His campaign is just abysmal.”

The Democrats should have gone with Steve Westly. He had the looks and the charisma to take on Arnold. But the liberal base wanted a hard-core true believer who is threatening to drag down most of their statewide ticket. The only exceptions are Feinstein and Brown who will despite rather than because of Angelides as they have name recognition going for them. I see the rest as doomed, even the ineffectual Cruz Bustamante whose portly figure is a caricature of the rotound politician. Considering this is supposed to be a banner year for the Democrats, their performance in California to say the least, has been underwhelming.

Let's see if this works better than Phil's Dump Nixon platform.
