Phil Angelides made one thing clear during his appearance on Adam Carolla's raucous morning radio show Thursday.
"First of all, I'm not going to make out with anyone," Angelides declared after Carolla dared a man to kiss an elderly woman to win tickets to the Playboy Mansion in a preceding segment.
Carolla's defunct television program, "The Man Show," regularly featured bikini-clad women jumping on a trampoline, and he didn't tame his style one bit for Angelides, the Harvard graduate who has long considered himself the more intellectual candidate in his race against Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Carolla's show is heard on West Coast FM radio stations with a young male target audience, and Angelides' appearance came a week after Schwarzenegger visited the nationally televised "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno." Angelides has filed a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission seeking "equal time" on California television stations. Angelides' campaign insisted that the Carolla interview was not intended as a response to the Leno show because it had been scheduled well in advance.
Angelides began with a stump speech on education, promising to lower tuition and fees for college students, including those at community colleges. That prompted Carolla to ridicule Angelides' plan by making fun of those who can't afford community college, offering that "for community college, all you need is a moped."
While Angelides insisted that books alone can cost $500 a semester, Carolla riffed that junior colleges are "a graveyard where stupid people go to die."
Lincoln-Douglas, it was not.
