Happy Vegemites? We don't think so (The United States bans Vegemite)
Sunday Herald Sun ^ | 22nd October 2006 | Kelvin Healey

THE US has banned Vegemite, even to the point of searching Aussies for jars of the spread as they enter the country.

The bizarre condiment crackdown was prompted because Vegemite has been deemed illegal under US food laws.

The great Aussie icon -- faithfully carried around the world by travellers from Down Under -- contains folate, which under a technicality, the US allows only to be added to breads and cereals.

Australian expatriates in the US said enforcement of the ban had been gradually stepped up and was now ruining lifelong Vegemite on toast breakfast traditions.

Former Geelong man Daniel Fogarty, who now lives in Calgary, said he was stunned when searched for Vegemite while crossing the US border on a trip to Montana recently.

"The border guard searched our car and asked us if we were carrying any Vegemite," Mr Fogarty said.

"I was flabbergasted.

"The official said Vegemite wasn't permitted in the US."

We need a Constitutional Amendment to stop the government from banning stuff that doesn't actually outright KILL you!

I think this is an urban legend. Someone was trying to spread this (no pun intended) on another website, and claimed that his Vegemite order was cancelled, and that he should contact the "FDA (Federal Department of Agriculture)," which is obviously wrong (FDA is Food and Drug Administration, part of HHS; Agriculture is USDA).

Vegemite is Aussie Marmite.

Shhhhhh!

Don't let them connect Vegemite and Marmite as one and the same. I just bought a large jar of Marmite and Bovril along with Oxo cubes this morning at the British Import Store, maybe I should pick up some more on my next trip into town, just in case.

Check if it contains folate - that seems to be the issue. It's added to Vegemite - maybe it isn't added to Marmite.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Kraft starts manufacturing a folate free Vegemite for export after this - the amount in it is absolutely tiny.

IMO, you take a bottle of soy sauce, and reduce it to a paste.

Been a while, but I had some in a restaurant "jelly" style package.

Made by Kraft, btw.

Oh, and it can be used as a thermal paste for mating heat sinks and cpus, although when it dries out, it loses some effectiveness.

Bloody silly!

Personally I can't stand the stuff. The only Aussie food I dislike more is custard apples (no, that's not a desert made with custard and apples, it's a non-apple fruit, which, for those of us who carry the gene that causes us to experience phenylthoicarbamide as really vile tasting, should come with a barf warning).

Of course there are plenty of Aussie foods that are wonderful, mostly deserts: pavolova, huge merangues smothered in whipped cream and passion-fruit pulp, ANZAC biscuits, and the ubiquitous 'bars', whether lemon, almond, chocolate, . . . though the streotypical 'shrimp on the barbie' and steak and salad are up there, too.

Still, the Aussies are our good mates in the GWOT, and Vegemite is an Aussie staple--I think you have to have grown up with the stuff. (I know Aussies who feel the same way about peanut butter that I do about Vegemite.) This ruling has to be rescinded!

xsboy went to the door to get her and then sat in the front seat of the SUV with his dad, leaving her to sit behind them. i roared! he is SOOOOO not ready for primetime!

Had almost exactly the same experience with my (now 16yo) son last year, on his first date.

There's been no second date, so far. :-0

Marmite.

Ingredients:
Yeast Extract,

Vegetable Extract,
Niacin,
Spice Extracts,
Thiamin,
Riboflavin,
Folic Acid,

Nothing about folate.

The map is delightful. Do you have one for bag/sack/polk as well?

But what does it have to do with the thread.

Incidentally, this confirms my long-held contention that culturally the midwest begins in Western PA.

Folic Acid === folate. Sorry.

i actually said something to some of my friends this week that this was a distinct possibility. when we give his buddies a ride somewhere, they always sit in the back and xsboy sits with the parent, he truly doesn't see the difference and that is FINE by me! this is way too soon to be dating, except for this 8 person homecoming date!

Interesting. I just discovered what marmite/vegamite is today on BBC America. A brewery owner was explaining that it is made from the "squidgey stuff" that is left in the bottom of the vat after brewing. If that doesn't sound yummy, I don't know what does. LOL!

My Aussie wife and I use Vegemite on mouse traps. The mice don't like it, but they often succumb to the odors when they take a whiff.

My son's "romantic" goodnight to his first date last year: "Thanks, g'night, had a good time" [spoken looking back over his shoulder, at the girl and her mom, as he walked out of her house] ;-)

I don't recall having any real interest in dating until I was about 17 or so, and it didn't kick in with a vengeance until I was 19-going-on-20. You probably don't have to really start worrying for a while yet. :-)

Now in 8 years or so when my girls start dating, you can give me some advice. (I have plenty of gun-cleaning supplies laid in already. ;-))

And American brewers just flush that stuff down the drain! Who knew?!?
