US jails Egypt pair for slavery

Two Egyptians have been jailed by a US court after pleading guilty to enslaving a 10-year-old Egyptian girl at their south California home. Abdel Nasser Ibrahim was given three years in prison while his ex-wife, Amal Motelib, received a 22-month sentence.

They were also ordered to pay more than $76,000 (£40,500) to the girl for two years of forced labour during which she served the couple's family of seven.

She worked 16-hour days and was denied access to education, prosecutors said.

Ibrahim and Motelib will be deported after serving their sentences, officials said.

"The young victim in this case was subject to inhumane conditions that included both physical and verbal abuse," US Attorney Debra Wong Yang said.

The girl, who is now 16, has been granted a visa allowing her to stay in the US.

Justice. Especially the part about their deportation. Good.

This stuff goes on. I know a lady who with her friends in her lady's circle look for Philipina and Indonesian women held captive by the international crowd in the Washington DC area.

They regularly free slaves.

I'd say this is more than a "cultural" sort of thing.

Evidently her family "rented" her to these lovely people for $30 a month!

And this Sunday in the WaPo some anglo lady was writing all about why she converted to Islam and how miuch better it was for women -- I suppose she meant if they rruvive the honor killing and the Koranically legitimized beatings ....

Lovely folks. Lovely religion. Just effin' lovely.

All of their assets should be given to this slave!

Longer jail time before the deportation.

Wow. One and a half years in jail in the USA for a felony slavery conviction. Actually probably more like 11 months before parole and probation.

I wonder how many Union soldiers from the Civil War are turning over in their grave knowing that a slavery conviction in the modern USA is less serious a crime as it is to dump antifreeze in an area where a California Condor might drink it?

Maybe the perp family should have been sold into slavery, with the proceeds [minus costs] going to the girl.

Ibrahim and Motelib will be deported after serving their sentences, officials said.

Interesting that all concerned are same nationality in this case. Seems like the recent Colorado case was Saudi perps / Indonesian slave (which is apparently not uncommon in the Kingdom as well).

I didn't quite understand how they got such reduced sentences ~ slavery should draw 16 to 20 years minimum, with no parole. Give the slaveowner a darned good taste of it.

I agree, but I suppose that there is a premium of getting them out of the country as soon as possible. Who wants to support this scum at the expense of our tax dollars.

I think we could make the Saudis pay for these folks. Odds are they have rich relatives and Saudis will believe anything about America if you yell at them.

Well, whoa! I know that the koran says its OK for muslims to, what is it, to seize them, and bind them, and make them pay a ransom for their lives or you can cut off their head, at least thats what Mohammad said. But we aren't Muslims, at least not yet!

Nothing like getting in practice. 'sides, I'm sure we can take more of them hostage than they can of us.

Just seize a bunch of them and shake down the whole country!

I reread what you said. I think that yelling would be a good idea even if they didn't give us money. (Maybe we could trade their relatives for some American children abducted by their fathers to Saudi Arabia.)
