Lincoln Chafee, the only Republican U.S. senator to vote against the Iraq war, often breaks ranks with his party to survive in one of the nation's most liberal states.
But in two weeks Rhode Island may break ranks with Chafee, ousting one of the most moderate voices in the Republican Party and handing the Democrats one of six key seats needed to seize control of the Senate...
Trailing by four to 11 points in recent polls, Chafee is stressing his unique brand of Republicanism - from championing environmental issues to fighting Bush's tax cuts, pressing for direct talks with Iran, opposing Bush's Supreme Court nominee and even voting against Bush in the 2004 election.

I actually feel sorry for the dem in this race. What does he have to run on? Dem's want higher taxes, so does Chaffee, Chaffee doesn't like conservative judges, Chaffee wants us out of Iraq.
Lessons to take away from this election. We won't win every contest we want to win this year, because the Republican Party has lost sight of certain truths.
1. No more RINOs. People voted for conservatism, but they didn't get what they wanted. Frankly, losing some of these seats won't affect the cause of conservatism whatsoever.
2. Police thyself. If someone's conduct is questionable, then the party leadership should find a suitable challenger for the primary. Crooked government is Democrat value, and that's why we swept the house in '94!
If he were to win and the Senate was held by Republicans by one seat this little weasel would sell out in a heartbeat.
Quit being so reasonable. It disturbs the rantings of the frothing at the mouth crowd.
If we lose one seat, let this be the one.
Why do they persist in labeling liberal Republicans as moderate? Oh, I get it. So they can be compared with dem liberals, who they also call moderates.
Chafee voted himself a score of 12 (out of 100) last year on the ACU ratings. This ties him with other conservative standouts such as Hillary and Dianne Feinstein.

The always acerbic Ann Coulter said all he had to do to become a Senator was to attend his father's funeral. It seems to be a bit more difficult than that this time.

I always have to chuckle when they say this. Chaffee has never been a Republican vote. His being gone from the Senate will be a relief to me.
Is it better to lose control of the Senate then to let some moderate Republicans keep their seats.
I guess you will be getting your wish in the next two weeks.

I have no problem getting rid of Chaffee. If it comes down to his seat for us to retain a majority, it would be a majority in name only. Anyway, I think we should always strive to get rid of the most liberal Republican every two years (though it should have been done in the primary...).
No, we need Republicans who at least are somewhat conservative. He isn't. I won't shed a tear if he loses.
I'm aware of RI being liberal state. And usually I also try to remind people about this electability issue. However, this guy is even more leftist than 'moderate Republican'. And even worse, he doesn't seem to make any effort to persuade conservatives to vote for him. In the height of primary (or a bit after that), he put a wrench on John Bolton's confirmation for UN. Apparently, he thinks, Republicans don't have any other choice but for him. Sadly, for him and for Republicans, they do.
A majority in name only still means that they can control the agenda of the Senate, and subpoena powers of the committess.
People who say it doesn't matter who controls the Senate really have little understanding on how Washingtoon works.
There is no reason to support a Democrat in all but name over a full blown Democrat. Chaffee is one of the few Republicans who deserves to be defeated, even in the general election, no matter where he is from.

So we get a guy who doesn't support a thing we believe in, who has a lifetime ACU rating of 37 (a pathetic 12 from 2005). That's reasonable? It's not like we're asking for much. Democrats defeated Lieberman in the Connecticut primaries. He has an ACU rating of 8 for 2005. And yet we let this joker past our primaries.
