I'll boycott the movie as I've boycotted their music. However, in today's political climate, it will probably do well in theaters in bigger cities and on college campuses.

Yes, Lloyd Maines does appear in the film. He's in a scene where they're recording the Chicks latest album. I don't remember if he said anything political.

Barbara Kopple was very nice. We got along well. We tried to speak after the film but the conversation kept getting interrupted. She had people that wanted to talk with her and I had a reporter from Finland who wanted to interview me.

Going back to Koppel's comments at the start -- she talks about all the adversity the Chicks had to go through and how strong they were in the face of the criticism. Barf! I'm thinking of all the CW singers who came out of the poverty and joblessness of West Virginia and the Appalachian south, living paycheck to paycheck, in one or two room houses with no privacy. Yeah, lets talk about how hard the Chicks have it.

When I first heard the DCs music, I liked it. They have great voices. But when they stopped singing and started political commentary, their voices were no longer ones that I wanted to listen to. Maybe one day they will realize that their God-given gift was musical talent, not world politics.

I have all the DC CDs prior to Maines putting her foot in her mouth. I have not and will not buy any more. Frankly, I prefer to patronize Shedaisy. Great music, no asinine politics.

Here's a lady singer who appreciates what the military are doing.

woofie: I enjoyed your discussion of Anita Bryant in your post ...I was aware of her only vaguely at the time ....good history lesson

CedarDave: Agree. The Ditsy Chicks have not in any way had their careers terminated like Anita's was when she spoke out for the Christian Biblical interpretation of homosexuality.

Thanks for your kind words. In my post to the movie's blog, I wrote:

The fall of the Dixie Chicks has nothing to do with repression of free speech, it has to do with the consequences of expressing it. There is no Constitutional guarantee that your free speech won’t come back to haunt you.

I'll bet you dollars to donuts that neither in Barbara Kopple’s film nor in the sure-to-be fawning appearance on Oprah will there be any discussion of another popular singer who expressed her free speech — someone named Anita Bryant. Bryant, a former beauty queen, pop singer (”Paper Roses”) and TV performer in the 1950s and ’60s was in the ’70s mainly known for her commercials for the Florida Orange Juice Commission. A very [devout] Christian, she spoke out on a pressing social and political issue just like the Dixie Chicks did; she led a movement to repeal a gay rights ordinance in her home of Dade County, Florida, which allowed homosexuals to be hired as school teachers. Her fight was successful, but it made her radioactive. Her Bible-based condemnation of homosexuality (tempered by her love for those who suffered from it, she said) set off a boycott of Florida Orange Juice and a shunning of her throughout the entertainment industry. Popular performers of that era such as Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, and Jane Fonda publicly slammed her. Eventually, she lost her job as Florida Juice’s pitchwoman, and she was essentially abandoned by everyone who made her a star. She has since filed for bankruptcy twice.

The Dixie Chicks have not suffered a sliver of what Anita Bryant has for expressing her right to free speech. Even though the Chicks are kaput as a force in country music, they still have sold over a million CDs of Taking the Long Way. They still sell well on iTunes. While the buying public has spoken and their tour was considerably shortened, they didn’t have to cancel their entire tour, whereas Bryant will never draw a broad audience ever again. And the Chicks’ story will be told in theaters later this week. I would advise the ladies not to hold their breaths until a filmmaker of Kopple’s caliber tries to rehabilitate Bryant’s career by making her out to be a victim of censorship.

Kristinn -- as the only one who has seen the final product, tell us: was there any mention of Anita Bryant in Shut Up & Sing, or was I dead wrong?

LOL to Kristinn. Smart enough NOT to pay for any of more Ditzie Chicks trash, even in movie form.

Freerepublic silently but overwhelmingly affects the political and cultural chatter in every media and political corner in the USA and is seen by every pollster and pundit in the nation...even affecting things worldwide.

Freerepublic-silent but deadly.

I want to know more about the FreeRepublic mailing list by which we get our marching orders. I keep asking my mailman but there's never anything from Command Headquarters in Fresno.

I got my marching orders on the Dixie Chick thing by recording Rush Limbaugh, then taking every 13th word, dubbed them together and then played it backwards. I'm still waiting for the decoder ring. I think those are for >$50 monthly people. : (

You mean you haven't been wet-wired into Karl's MinionNet yet? It's great! I can simultaneously get talking points and marching orders from Karl, the Freemasons, the Elders of Zion, and the Bilderberg Group!

I'm impressed, I'm only at the third level -- just got my decoder ring...

it made her radioactive

Thanks for the reminder about Anita Bryant, I have to admit I HAD forgotten about that little episode of homo-agend-erated liberal intolerance.

Here's another one, a little more recent, Dr. Laura.

Despite never having watched her show, I immediately sent away for her "Dr. Laura" logo ball cap and coffee cup when she made her statements about homos. She's got a set of big ones.

This gets back to what Rush has been saying about Michael J. Fox.

When you enter the political arena you automatically and rightfully open yourself up to being challenged. Goes with the territory. Somehow liberals, particularly the ones in show biz, can't grasp this fact, and most go into high dudgeon when they are in any way questioned. They think they can call GWB any name they want, yet they gripe and play the victim when we defend what we hold dear. It seems to me that the Dixie Chicks are still in defense mode after all this time. They just can't accept that much of their fan base, and other conservatives, aren't of the same mind they are. Grow up, girls!

I had to get a backbone connection just so I wouldn't lag from all the subliminal messages.

Mine's very uncomfortable. They put it between the 7th and 8th vertebrae.
