Good article. I used to see movies all the time, up until the late 1990s. Then I pretty much stopped. 90% of all movies were crap.
Last weekend I went to see Scorsese's new film "The Departed" and it was the best film of the past few years. I plan on seeing it at least 3 more times in the theater.
I agree. Have seen it twice and will probably see it again. Also want to see FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS. But THE DEPARTED was the first flick I'd seen in a theater THIS YEAR! And I used to go to the movies a lot.
Is Departed as gruesome as I've heard it is?
The fact that a second rate Scorcese film (and a remake at that) gets to be considered the best of the past few years proves that after years of eating shit crap suddenly tastes good. That film is full of holes.

I loved it! No kids though.
Same here. We used to rent several video's each weekend during the summer. This year we'd walk through and there is no selection... they flat out aren't making many good movies these days, not even worth renting, much less $20 bucks to go sit in the theatre.
Really? My wife and I saw it and frankly I regret it. I am finished with Scorcese movies, as he substitutes shocking acts of violence, sex, and snappy obscenity-laden dialogue for real character development. His movies hold your attention but go nowhere. Scorcese does not allow you to feel sympathy for any major character, because they are all equally bad, and most of the problems they had at the start of the film are still there at the end. If you want a move on undercover police work that really digs deep into character development, with a main character that develops and is really interesting, rent Donnie Brasco.
Also, Scorcese seems to have a problem with the Catholic Church, and I really don't have time for that.
